I can't seem to find a definitive answer anywhere... is Newsies eligible for Best Score?
I was just going to ask that. I guess so.....
Sounds like Ricky Martin is the only surprise.
Kara Lindsay is LEADING?!!!! That could be interesting. I wonder if she'll slip into the 5th spot as a surprise.
ETA: No ruling on James Earl Jones means that he will be in the leading category as well! That's a big shock.

Ben Daniels, Adam James, Patricia Kalember and Jennifer Tilly will be considered eligible in the Best Performance by a Featured Actor/Actress in a Play categories for their respective performances in Don’t Dress for Dinner.
Were these four above the title or something? Does that mean Spencer Kayden is going in the Lead Actress category? I'm confused as to why they'd specifically be designed Featured and she'd be left out otherwise.

What about One Man, Two Guvnors?
Those 4 were above the title. I believe Spencer and David were below the title.
Putting Kara Lindsay in the leading actress category is a HUGE mistake.
Also, putting Ricky Martin in featured is a bad idea. I guess they were following the precedent of the original, however.
Kara Lindsay as leading?!? And what about One Man, Two Guvnors? I'm assuming they're considering it an new play because there was nothing about it being a revival?

I don't know if I agree with that. Everyone has been talking about the 5th spot as Elena Roger vs. Bernadette Peters. Elena was assumed to get the spot because her show is still open. But with her mixed reviews and recent vocal issues, the scale was looking to tip back towards Bernadette. But if there is the option of ANOTHER actress in a show currently open (an actress who, by the way, received very positive reviews), that might work in Kara's favor.

I'm surprised Kara Lindsay and Ben Fankhauser are considered leading rather than featured, they'd had more of a chance at nomination if they were considered for featured.
Once not eligble for Score does increase Newsies' chances of winning that Tony unless there is a major upset.

Interesting trend regarding projection design. 3 shows are having their projection designers jointly considered with the set designer for Best Scenic Design. I feel like this could definitely lead to a Best Projection Design category in the future.

Nearly everything I've seen agrees that the new music in NEWSIES is weak, with the exception of one song. If NEWSIES wins Best Score, which I agree it probably will, judging by how this season has gone, it will almost certainly be on the strength of the preexisting material, which doesn't feel right to me. There's nothing I can do about it except complain, of course, but still.
The one I'm most surprised about is Ben Fankhauser. I think he'd have a better shot at featured.
Lindsay's role was pretty small and thankless at papermill. Has it been beefed up the much for Broadway? I don't think there's a chance in hell that she'd get nominated over Peters and Roger.
i'm not totally surprised they put Kara into Leading, but am quite surprised they put Ben in leading rather than featured. I know he's considered one of the "leads" but i think he would have had a better shot at a nomination as featured bc jeremy is more clearing the "leading man" of the show.

I wonder if they moved Ben to leading cause they thought Andrew Kennan Bolger might have a better shot at featured? Who knows.

Jeremy Jordan will get a nomination for Newsies, he's the only actor from the show to have been nominated in all the other awards so far.

bjh2114 - Elena is having recent vocal issues? I last saw the show a month ago and she was fine, what's going on now?
i believe the "vocal issues" they are referring to are the 3 lines she does not belt in "Buenos Aires", but sings in her head voice.

^ Thanks. It sounded like she had been sick and lost her voice. She sounded exactly the same the two times I saw her, at least a month apart.
I love Elena but I do admit she was hitting notes that could have broken glass during her performance. Her not belting those three lines, though, was more painful.

Strange decision to put Kara Lindsay into leading. Now it's all down to Da'Vine Joy Randolph and Judy Kuhn for Featured Actress in a Musical.

So is Josh Young for JCS in the featured category then or is the general consensus that he's been out too much bc of his illness to have a real shot at a nom?
