Ms. Ebersole is not missing performances left and right to my knowledge.
And I'm quite sure LaChanze wasn't sick for a year long contract.

Posted: 5/19/07 at 10:46pmYou could easily tell the show took a toll on Lachanze's voice, so I don't think she was calling out for nothing. And that wasn't wonderfulwizard's question. If she WAS missing performances, would you still give her the tony?

Posted: 5/19/07 at 10:47pmI know I sound like a hypocrite, but yes. Ms. Ebersole's performance will go on to be legendary. LaChanze's minor singing and bland, oversung eleven o'clocker won't.

Jv,
Stating that LaChanze (or anyone else, for that matter) is not good in a show because of missed performances is simply ridiculous. One has absolutely nothing to do with the other.
"LaChanze was rarely in the show"- I saw "CP" 10 times during her run, and she was out once (which I believe was during a scheduled vacation)
If you like Lupone (personally, I like her, but didnt even think she was on stage enough in "ST" to win the award), and felt that she deserved the Tony over LaChanze, fine, but your reasoning does not hold water.

Posted: 5/19/07 at 11:24pmI'm not giving this as an excuse to why she was out a lot, because it shouldn't be and isn't one, but I know she has two young kids at home, so that could have had something to do with it.

<< LaChanze was reported absent A LOT. >>
And that STILL has absolutely nothing to do with her performance - I can only tell you from my own personal experience--- she was only out one time out of the 10 times that I saw the show during her run.

speaking of upsets, does anyone know why les miserbles didn't get any nominations? i've seen the show about 10 times including new york, london, and touring casts and this revival cast was by far the best i've ever seen; i was just wondering why it wouldn't have gotten anything...maybe the critics are mad at boubil and schonberg for pirate queen? :)
and about grey gardens--christine ebersole was incredible! i was extremely impressed by her performance, that is until i saw the movie and i became even more obsessed. she IS little edie beale. i really hope she wins, can't imagine anyone else would

The original production -- which won 9 Tony Awards -- closed just three years ago after a 16 year run on Broadway. This "revival" is the exact same production that was here for 16 years, and it wouldn't be fair to take nomination slots away from new productions to recognize what is essentially a continuation of the long, acclaimed original run that was just here.

Then why is it OK for shows that belong at amusement parks *cough cough* Legally Blond get nominations?
As for upsets, I thought it was pretty strange that Pirate Queen didn't get a choreography, costumes or set decor nomination. From what I've seen, everyone involved in the production did a lot with the crap material they were forced to work with. However, this has been discussed to death here so...
I'm pretty glad the Tony comittee decided to shun both Les Mis and Pirate Queen. While I loved the revival (I never got a chance to see it during the first run) and thought a few of the performances were nomination-worthy, if they had given producers the message that making a revival after three years was an acceptable practice, who knows what have happened.
#135re: Tony Upsets
Posted: 5/20/07 at 10:41amExactly. They don't want to be encouraging producers to stop back in for "Return Engagements" that end up getting extended and extended -- meanwhile taking up space in a theatre that could be otherwise occupied by a fresh new piece of material.

I keep hearing complaints about the Les Mis revival taking up space that could be used for "fresh new material".
What is this fresh new material? "Sister Act"? "The Wiz"?
The first new musical of the season, "Xanadu" is about to start previews. I suppose it's a good thing there was a theater available for that fresh new idea.

Posted: 5/20/07 at 4:33pmAre there really any upsets? The Tonys are rarely predictable and very political. After many years of Tony watching some shows/actors that seem to have "locks" don't win the prize, sometimes they do. I've been shocked almost every year at some show or actor winning over who I thought was a clear favorite. Anyone nominated has a shot at winning. Just my 2 cents.

Best actress in a musical is fairly predictable as is best play this year.
(c'mon people, Christine Ebersole and Coast of Utopia are pretty much done deals)
Other categories are fairly predictable, too, IMO.

Is it their last? I thought they had one more on reserve.
They won't win. If SPRING AWAKENING doesn't win, GREY GARDENS will - but SPRING AWAKENING has score in the bag.

Elphie3, it is not Kander & Ebb's last show. They have at least two more shows in the works that they had written before Fred Ebb died.
bwaygal1, THE COAST OF UTOPIA for Best Play is not a done deal. It could very likely go to RADIO GOLF, while COAST takes the design awards.

munk-i think GG has actress and most likely featured actress as well.
Foster-don't see how RG could beat COU, which is monumental in its undertaking.
#144re: Tony Upsets
Posted: 5/20/07 at 4:56pmRADIO GOLF is a minor trifle when compared with UTOPIA.

COAST OF UTOPIA is closed, which is the primary factor in my believing that it may very likely win the three design awards and probably direction, but NOT Best Play, which is the one award that could keep a show running that may otherwise be struggling at the box office.
RADIO GOLF is August Wilson's final play in his 10 play cycle. Along with this, it is a beautiful play and a tightly acted and directed production. It would not only be a great tribute to Wilson's body of work to award him with the Best Play trophy, but it would also get people to the theatre to see his final work and appreciate his talents one last time on Broadway.

Foster, I don't think COU closing will affect the Tonys at all. I think it was too big of an event to forget about.
I'll be shocked if it doesn't win Best Play.
