I'm another vote for "no one stands a chance against MLW".
Not only is her performance MILES better than anyone else in this category, Tony voters most certainly do not vote on who is HOT, when it comes to acting.
Shows, sure.
Actors, definitely not.

Posted: 5/18/07 at 2:36pmReally walt? Are you forgetting Winokur over Peters? Did she *really* give a more worthy performance as Tracy? Are you saying Idina Menzel truly gave the tour de force performance that Pinkins' was giving in CoC? I'm not being sarcastic, I'm posing a serious question. MLW is the sentimental favorite and is fantastic but don't negate other factors considering what the very recent past has shown us.

This might have been mentioned on another thread, but given the "weak" field (or, at least, that seems to be the general consensus) in the Featured Actress - Musical category (Wilson the standout, it seems), am I the only one that thinks that
Erin Davie should have received a nom?
I thought she was quite good !

Serious answer.
Bernadette wasn't THAT good. I thought she gave a creditable, servicable performance. Winokur was an absolute joy to watch on stage, and gave a wonderful performance.
I didn't see CoC, so I can't comment, but I thought Menzel's performance was extraordinary, and, more to the point, unbeatable.
ETA: Yes, I wanted Erin Davie to be on that list, too!

I saw both and Pinkins tore your heart to shreds while *most* subsequent Elphaba's have been as good, if not better than Menzel. We'll all see for ourselves Sunday the 10th. I'm never all that surprised, there's no rhyme or reason behind the nods (particularly this year) same goes for the winners.

Oh come on, to say that Winokur in any way, shape or form deserved that Tony over Peters is ABSURD. You're talking about an incredibly complex character and an extraordinary performer's work in it lose to an every day kind of role played by a girl with a lot of spunk. Al is right...MLW is probably leagues above the rest, but given recent Tony past, Orfeh could take it.
And of course Tony voters vote on who's "hot." Much as I like to think Menzel was voted on because she deserved her Tony, I'm not exactly sure that's where all her votes came from.
Do I think Orfeh is in a that sort of position...not necessarily, because Menzel and WInokur were certainly in more popular shows, but with these awards, anything is possible.

I guess we'll see in a couple weeks. (Al, the Tonys are in 3 weeks, not next Sunday.)
However, if you really want to go by what's "hot", no one would be predicting Poppins or Curtains would take SA, which plenty of people ARE.
ETA: The Pinkins/Peters comparisions aren't even valid. Ziemba is the potential upset. There's no way Orfeh can win.

Posted: 5/18/07 at 2:59pmSee what happens when you move to LA? I'll correct that. And Broadwaygirl107, you and I are on the exact same page. Walt, that's why I noted it would be an upset if Poppins won.
#58re: Tony Upsets
Posted: 5/18/07 at 3:01pmRight, but I see very few people predicing an MLW upset by Orfeh. Orfeh is giving an amusing performance in a musical that the Tony voters didn't even like enough to nominate for Best Musical.
#59re: Tony Upsets
Posted: 5/18/07 at 3:06pmSorry Walt but in someone else's hands that role(Paulette) would NEVER have gotten even a Tony *nod*, let alone the 3 top award nominations of the season. Orfeh brought a very UNamusing and pretty small part to life on stage while being stuck with some of the most UNamusing songs in an UNamusing show with a really UNoriginal book. That's a testament to her talent, not the role. My 2 cents. The upsets I'm pulling for are Orfeh, (obviously) and Audra!
#60re: Tony Upsets
Posted: 5/18/07 at 3:08pmI agree with you that she's the only one who could have gotten a Tony nom out of that role. But a nomination is certainly not a ticket for the statue.

Didn't say it was, we're all speculating what might constitute an upset.

Is anyone concerned that GG and SA will split the artistic votes (ala Lachiusa's loss for Score in 99)?
I have to say though, if MP wins Best Musical, then I will finally lose my relatively young theatre lover optimism about the Tony Awards being about quality in any way.

Posted: 5/18/07 at 3:15pmI would hate it if Orfeh won, mostly because of the annoyingly self-satisfied vogue face that she's giving in all the photos I've seen posted of her on BWW. It's not hard to just smile!
#65re: Tony Upsets
Posted: 5/18/07 at 3:26pmSo nice of you to join us Katie! Slumming here at BWW? Really, that's just about the most laughable reason anyone has ever given for anything. Jealousy is an ugly thing and *reads* loud and clear on any message board.
#66re: Tony Upsets
Posted: 5/18/07 at 3:29pmWho cares what Orfeh looks like in photos? She's really pretty, whether she smiles or not. That has nothing to do with the discussion.

Hi, there! I'm SorryGrateful and I like to employ sarcasm in my posts. I find it fun at times.
P.S. Who's Katie? Or was that not directed at me?
#69re: Tony Upsets
Posted: 5/18/07 at 3:32pmYou figured that out too Walt? Seems Katie has made it her mission in life to go on and on about how Orfeh is the devil himself because she *GASP* has the nerve to actually look stunning on the red carpet. Can you believe the sheer audacity the b*tch has trying to do THAT, what could Orfeh be thinking?
#70re: Tony Upsets

LOL.
Orfeh has been doing the red carpet circuit for what, fifteen, sixteen years? I assume she knows exactly what she's doing.

Posted: 5/18/07 at 3:36pmThis was at long last, a pretty good, legitimate and somewhat healthy and interesting thread, where no one got too out of hand until Sorrygrateful showed up. Can we take it back to where it needs to be and not turn this into yet the millionth Orfeh debate. You should be "sorry" and you are.

Change of direction:
The big upset of the evening will be Jay Johnson over Kiki and Herb.

Oh and there's that Walt. Too bad she'll never learn, poor unattractive troll :). And to stay on topic, there's always Grey Gardens for best score.
