re: Tony Upsets

Why would that be an upset? I thought that was a given. :)

re: Tony Upsets

Actually I was very pleased that Marissa won for her role in Hairspray. On the other hand, I think Tonya deserved it over Idina who screeched and gasped her way through Wicked.

re: Tony Upsets

That breath thing Idina has is so distracting. I thought TP was unbeatable which just goes to show you, you never know what the (ill)logic is behind the nominations and the wins. Upsets are completely plausible.

re: Tony Upsets

Not only plausible, but to be expected.

re: Tony Upsets

Totally expected Kalimba.

To those saying Orfeh v. MLW to Winokur v. Peters:

Keep in mind that when Marissa won, Hairspray swept the awards that year. Marissa was just riding the wave. And I don't think anyone is expecting Legally Blonde to sweep at all.
I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.

re: Tony Upsets

Again, totally right WW but we're just going with what would put shock waves through the audience this year. I can't think what it would be like if Ebersole loses to ANYONE, if SA loses to MP, if MLW loses to Orfeh. People would freak out.

re: Tony Upsets

And not a good freak out, like when AQ beat Wicked.

re: Tony Upsets

Would it really be an upset if Audra takes the Tony this year?

re: Tony Upsets

My big fear is that everyone's been saying for so long that the Tony is Ebersole's that it's actually jinxed her. (Yes, I believe in jinxes. re: Tony Upsets) I really want her to win.

re: Tony Upsets

If Audra didnt already have a butt load of Tonys, it would be a much bigger possibility, imo.

re: Tony Upsets

Yeah, Audra has too many Tonys to be considered a real threat to Ebersole. re: Tony Upsets

True. Girlfriend already has, what, four? Of course, I think it should be about talent and not who's already gotten one, but I'm naive and trusting like that.

re: Tony Upsets

Talk about upsets, the year Christine Ebersole won out over Marla Schaffel. I think that's the reason why I don't particularly care for her.

re: Tony Upsets

Dottie, I was blown away by Ebersole in 42nd street and wasnt surprised at all. I saw what a hot mess Tammy Grimes was in the original...she made SO MUCH out of that role.

I DEF. didnt meant to imply that someone should win a tony for anything other than that performance, that year, but if Audra had been doing all of this good work, and this was possibly her first tony...it'd be alot different.

Gotta catch a train...nite kids!

re: Tony Upsets

Oh, Doodle, I felt that although her portrayal of Dorothy Brock was worthy of a nomination, I liked Marla much better.

I saw the original production, and I don't remember much about Tammy Grimes performance at all, but I like the way you described it.

re: Tony Upsets

I didn't see CoC, so I can't comment, but I thought Menzel's performance was extraordinary, and, more to the point, unbeatable

She was unbeatable but you never saw the other performances...mmm, that's great.

She was probably the weakest of all nominees, and most likely the consolation prize for Wicked not winning Best Musical.

I didn't say I didn't see the other performances, I said I didn't see CoC.
#94

re: Tony Upsets

Still, how can she be, to the point, unbeatable, if you never saw the strongest performance of that season?

re: Tony Upsets

doodle-I saw 42nd St. just before the Tonys and predicted, to the chagrin of theater colleagues, she would win.
Just blew me away. (and I had just seen her in "Gore Vidal's The Best Man".)
She owned the stage. (Still does)
And I felt she deserved the award.

re: Tony Upsets

As has been alluded to many times in this thread, being unbeatable has nothing to do with the strength of your performance.

Just had to say something about Orfeh winning...

HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA! HA.

Never gonna happen.

Hoping for Audra to pull it off & also hoping for Curtains or Phppins to win.

In all of this arguing about what will win what, I thought of a very eye-opening sentence from Patti LuPone...." The base of the Tony is plastic"....Just thought I would share that..
