Tony Upsets

Posted: 5/18/07 at 7:13pmI want Christopher Plummer to win but it's just because he was Captain von Trapp. And I saw TALK RADIO and loved it more than most musicals I saw this season. Which is rare for me. I'm not a play fan. Nah Liev will win, I'm sure of it. That's not disappointing.

"Hoping for Audra to pull it off & also hoping for Curtains or Phppins to win."
Hoping for your wish never to come true. It won't. Audra simply wasn't that good.

THANK YOU!!!! I couldn't believe Kristin didn't even get nominated! That was the biggest upset of all! I thought she was sure to win the Tony-it never entered my mind that she wouldn't even get a nomination! I was shocked!
Now, I just hope that Legally Blonde and Spring Awakening don't win over everything. It's sad, some of the shows on Broadway now.

<< Audra simply wasn't that good. >>
Are we talking about "110"? Wasnt that good ?!
#106re: Tony Upsets
Posted: 5/19/07 at 5:13pmWhen we're comparing her to Christine Ebersole, she wasn't that good. It honestly didn't like the material. It was weak. That could have been a problem too.
#107re: Tony Upsets
Posted: 5/19/07 at 5:46pmIt may have been material. But it's also the 'role of a lifetime' for Ms. E., whereas, IMO, Audra's 'role of a lifetime' has yet to appear. (to date, it could be Sarah from Ragtime, but I think her best role is yet to come.)
#108re: Tony Upsets
Posted: 5/19/07 at 5:56pmNot sure if she will ever have better material to work with than "Ragtime", but ya never know. As far as not being that good compared to Ebersole... have to disagree there. They are two different actors, working with two totally different productions, but they were BOTH phenomenal.

Why is Tony upset?

Posted: 5/19/07 at 5:58pmFirst of all, I am of the dissenting view that Ragtime wasn't that great. I read the book and the musical disappointed me. Also, I didn't say Audra wasn't good. I just feel that her best role is yet to come. (and it's Ebersole's year)

The upset will be GG taking Best Musical over SA which I doubt will happen unfortunately. Whatever happened to class?
Re Audra, I am not a huge fan of hers but I wonder if she was offered the lead in COLOR PURPLE? Would seem more of an acting challenge that the bland 110.
I saw the production about 10 years ago with Karen Ziemba who was good because it was the perfect fit of bland actress with bland material.
Re Kristin, she gives the same perf over and over again. If she wants to stretch let her do LITTLE DOG LAUGHED.

While I am mostly expecting 'Spring Awakening' to take Best Musical, there's a tiny part of my brain that is very nervous about 'Mary Poppins' being nominated. It would be a massive upset if 'Mary Poppins' won Best Musical, and after 'Jersey Boys' and 'Spamalot', I can't be 100% certain that it won't. O_O

Posted: 5/19/07 at 9:19pmWeez, I agree, although I wouldn't be upset; I think though either way, someone is always going to be upset over what takes Best Musical: some people will be upset if Spring Awakening wins, some will be upset if Grey Gardens wins, some will be upset if Mary Poppins wins, and some will be upset if Curtains wins..We're all opinionated and that means not everyone is going to be happy with the outcome..But whatever happens, happens for a reason.

Here's my thoughts on likely upsets:
Leading Actor in a Musical: Groff over Esparza. Just a gut feeling.
Leading Actress in a Musical: Bell Bundy over Ebersole (it happened last year - when a category is crowded with very strong performances, votes get divided, and when one actress has a show with major commercial support they secure a lot of votes and tip the scales. Ebersole is clearly the forerunner, but Murphy and McDonald WILL pull votes, and Bell Bundy has tons of corporate support and has the benefit of never winning a Tony - just like LaChanze had over LuPone, whose votes were pulled by O'Hara and Rivera.)
Leading Actress in a Play: Assuming that Lansbury is the forerunner, Redgrave over her. I actually think this one is quite tough - Eve Best has a major chance too - is there a clear forerunner here?

Posted: 5/19/07 at 9:26pmUh, jerryherman, you might want to re-evaluate your Best Actress prediction. While there was an upset last year, Patti didn't have the kind of universal raves Christine has. And corporate support only matters for Best Musical. Really, if ANYONE has a shot at an upset, it's Audra, not LBB.

Julie White is the clear frontrunner for Best Leading Actress in a Play. She is the only nominee whose production was also nominated for Best Play (or Best Revival of a Play). She received the best reviews of all of the actresses in her category.
In your comparison of (Bell Bundy : Ebersole) to (LaChanze : LuPone), I must ask, did you see all four of these performances? LaChanze's performance was a force of nature and deserved her first Tony Award win. Comparing Bundy's performance to Ebersole's is akin to comparing Stephen Lynch's performance last year to John Lloyd Young's.

bway,
My post was more in a repsonse to JV, who said Audra wasnt that good compared to Ebersole- Yes, Ebersole is absolutely amazing in "GG", and I agree... its her Tony, However, Audra is excellent in "110"- She doesnt have the material to work with that Ebersole has, nor is her surrounding cast as good- She IS
"110"---

There is NO way that Bell Bundy is beating Ebersole--- and LaChanze won because she deserved it- You cant compare Bell Bundy beating Ebersole to LaChanze beating Lupone.
#121re: Tony Upsets
Posted: 5/19/07 at 10:35pmLaChanze didn't deserve it. LuPone did. Don't get me started on this one. LaChanze is not a personal favorite of mine, though I will admit she was very good in Once on This Island judging from the album. (It is one of the rare shows post 1970 I never saw) She was not good in The Color Purple, particularly because she missed performances left and right, (LuPone, I believe missed a few due to illness and took a vacation.) performed with little nuance and was unfortunately given awful material.

jv: I'm curious, but what would LaChanze's being absent for a lot of the shows have to do with the quality of her performance.
I didn't see her, but I saw Lupone and loved her.

I feel that in order to truly deserve an acting Tony, you need to play most of your performances. A day or two in your entire run is fine. If you come down with the flu or an illness Donna Murphy came down with durring Wonderful Town, that's acceptable. So is a vacation. However, LaChanze was rarely in the show and often was absent for reasons as ridiculous as a throat tinge. Merman probably went on with throat tinges left and right durring Gypsy.

And are you sure she wasn't sick as well?
Would you still give Ebersole the Tony if she missed performances?
