Can't argue about Les Miserables - it is my number one. It is obvious that it is a UK list however.

Seven Brides for Seven Brothers??? That was one of the biggest Broadway flops of the 80s. It only ran 5 performances (the same as Carrie the Musical). I take it that it did much better in the West End.

I saw that - it's almost as bad as Britain's Channel 4 Top 100 Musicals list (Grease #1! WHAT?!?!?!?!?)
If I had to pick, I'd go:
1. Sweeney
2. Fiddler
3. West Side
4. Gypsy
5. Cabaret
6. A Chorus Line
7. My Fair Lady
8. Follies
9. Company
10. A Little Night Music

"At the opening night party, they had clowns on stilts, jugglers, a chocolate fountain, popcorn, hot dogs. [My son] looked at me like I had been holding back. Like, 'This is what you do?' I had to tell him, 'No, no, darling. Opening nights don't usually look like this.' It's usually a dark bar with a bottle of vodka." ?Chitty Chitty Bang Bang's Jan Maxwell

Follies is the only show on that list that would have made a top ten list of mine.

I will have to admit, even I'm amazed that "Chess" made the list, and I am an ABBA fan...loud and proud about ABBA, too: just ask me!!! Then again, if you know any people from across the pond, ABBA is still a major musical commodity over in Europe. I wish they were here...that there were more people that realize that ABBA were a lot more than "Dancing Queen". I also defy anyone to find voices to equal Agnetha's in "The Winner Takes It All", and Anni-Frid's in "When All Is Said And Done", or "The Visitors". Talk about "money notes"... yeah, they hit 'em, alright...
"Chess" is a good musical with a weak storyline that is still playing in the UK. Take a chance on it. Get at least the greatest hits cd and listen to Tommy Korberg sing "Anthem". That song alone is worth the $35 to buy the 2-cd set. Then there is the Murray Head/Anders Glenmark performance of "One Night In Bangkok"...remember when MtV first came out? I do...this was one of the very first vids to be shown. "I Know Him So Well" is a very ABBA-like duet...with Elaine Page...and ??? I'm sorry, I always forget her name, and am too lazy to get up and look for it right now!! The duet "You and I" is also good.
The storyline sucks, but the music is another matter...imho.

Greatest Musicals of All Time. My version:
Musicals placed on this list have garnered some sort of merit either for being innovative to the genre or for having a long lasting life. (These are not in any order)
1. Gypsy
2. West Side Story
3. A Chorus Line
4. Into The Woods
5. RENT
6. Les Miserables
7. Phantom of the Opera
8. Fiddler On The Roof
9. Cabaret
10. 42nd Street
Add Another 10?
11: Miss Saigon
12: Little Shop Of Horrors
13. HAIR
14. My Fair Lady
15. Dream Girls
16. Showboat
17. Sweet Charity
18. Grease
19. Company
20. The Rocky Horror Show
God, I forgot how many of these shows I don't like! But anyhow, they've managed to get up there because they've done something interested or they are the best of a specific Genre. 42nd St is just a damn good old fashioned musical (When the cast is good)...
