I agree with a few things on the list but I don't like others.
I'm not a gay stereotype. I'm a coincidence.

I disagree with all of those lists!
the first one is like..the Webber/Schonburg list of doom
the first one is like..the Webber/Schonburg list of doom
"No two shows are alike in the making. Each show is a living
piece of your life in a small unreal world with its own character
and integrity; its own new set of memorable experiences and
incredible happenings. You begin to love and adapt to its strangeness.
Dreams harden into substance. Values come into focus. You wish
it would never end. The dream world vanishes like mist before a
rising sun; part of you vanishes with it. And back you land in the
real world with a thud- fogged, uneasy, jittery, difficult to get
along with. There is only one cure. A new show. A new, small
unreal world; new visions, experiences, incredible happenings.
Again you love it, adapt to it, wish it would never end.
But end it does. Another part of you vanishes.
That's show business."-Anonymous

Any list that leaves off "Sweeney Todd" and includes "Rocky" (a fun show, but hardly a musical masterpiece) should be immediately ignored.
I'm surprised "We Will Rock You" didn't break that top 10. :P

Billy Elliot has to be in there somewhere, even though it is relatively new.
It captures everything, is funny, sad, inspiring, great songs, great staging -everything!

THE KING AND I deserves to be on there. Where is GYPSY? Was it not as successful in London?

Of COURSE, this became a "MY top ten list" thread. We can't have a thread on BWW that doesn't list Wicked. Kids--Wicked ain't in the Top 50 Best Musicals of all time. Sorry.

To show my gratitude, I'll offer you this pointy black hat, which is just like the one Original Wicked Witch Margaret Hamilton wore in the movie!
IDINA MENZEL
What a great idea! How about throughout the play, you continue to offer me things like a black cloak, or a black
cape, or a broom to make me look more and more like Margaret Hamilton did! These attempts at humor will be painfully
predictable from a mile away!
AUDIENCE collectively groans.

In no particular order, because I can't even begin to try to rank things:
Sweeney Todd (seeing Angela Lansbury and Len Cariou do A Little Priest at the Sondheim concert a few weeks ago just reinforced how incredible this show is)
Showboat
A Chorus Line
West Side Story
Ragtime
Gypsy
Cabaret
Dreamgirls
Oklahoma
My Fair Lady
Another 10:
A Little Night Music
Les Miserables
Phantom
La Cage
Rent
Follies
Dancin'
Caroline or Change
Miss Saigon
Sound of Music (though I really hate it, there's no denying it's influence)
I've heard such great things about Billy Elliot that I wouldn't be surprised to see it eventually on this list.

Margo, please, bring some sanity to the proceedings.
Lists like these always end up being loaded with shows from the last ten years.
Same thing happens when people are asked to list the best movies.

Okay when I'm doing best I hafta completely take bias out so I'm also letting others effect me, though I don't know it well enough to understand what's so amazing about Sweeney Todd, from what everyone said, if I'm making a respectable list it has to be up there. I'm going as far as I can in terms of best: (No order)
1. West Side Story
2. Gypsy
3. Fiddler on the Roof
4. Sweeney Todd
5. Cabaret
6. My Fair Lady
7. A Chorus Line
8. Ragtime
9. Rent
Can't unbiasly add 10...I'm scared I was bias with 9...otherwise though I'm quite proud of that list

Tennesse Twang I beg to differ as my list encompasses at least three decades.

I've said this many times over, when thinking about the best musicals of all-time, you have to think of many things other than if you love that belter song in it. Or that the cast is fabulous. It should be measured on the quality of the work, the contribution it made to musical theatre and MAYBE the popularity.
Here's my top ten (in alphabetical order)
A Chorus Line
Cabaret
Company
Follies
Gypsy
Little Johnny Jones
Oklahoma!
Showboat
Sweeney Todd
West Side Story
It's no surprise that 5 of the 10 shows are by Stephen Sondheim, and 3 involved Michael Bennett.
But in my opinion, any "top 10 ever" list that doesn't include Chorus Line, Oklahoma, Gypsy, West Side, Showboat, and AT LEAST one full-Sondheim show, is not a top 10 list.

Ok so can the instigator of this list make a new best 10 based on the response poste it makes more sense, however I disagree with most people about half there choices and abviiously agree on the other 50%,
How about 10 best songs from a musical
lets hear it..

bj, I hafta disagree when you say Oklahoma has to be counted on any top 10 list. No one can argue its historic significance, but the show itself...well it was one of the first book musicals, at least in my opinion, there were still some kinks to be worked out.
I'd add Fiddler to my own personal list of something that has to be on a top 10.

I like "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers". Then again, me and flops... I have a reputation...
Any list that doesn't include "Ragtime", "Sweeney Todd" & "Gypsy" automatically doesn't get my attention.
Margo, pul-leaze?

I am SHOCKED that no list includes "Kiss Me, Kate". That is IMO the best musical of all time.

I'm quite happy to see a top ten list with CHESS included. Don't forget that it was a hit and ran for several years in London and produced several radio hits in the U.K. This is a list compiled by theatregoers from across the pond. Their thoughts and reactions are often very different than Americans. Thank God.
