In Hamilton, the candles that come out for Helpless/Satisfied aren't automated at all. There's not room backstage for it. They are manually set into the track, then pushed out with a pole. (And presumably pulled in the same way)
Lots of ways to do it if you're creative

Manually cranked winches and cables are one method (and are still not uncommon to come across), and the good old push-stick that Rainah describes is also pretty common, especially when the distance that needs to be traveled is not super far.

Anyone know of any videos explaining automation - especially on a tour - or a trap door room? Love to know how all that works.

If I recall correctly, the documentary Behind the Mask: The Story of The Phantom of the Opera contains some footage of the crew manually operating props, such as the rising and sliding candelabra, via pulleys and ropes from the trap space below the stage. I think the footage is from Her Majesty's Theatre in London, where the show's sets are mostly manipulated without automation.
