Trip of Love — Page 4

Thx DooWahDiddy! More reasons for me to gush about this show. First, I worked as the Assistant House Manager at Wonderettes at the Westside and loved every minute of it. Felt badly when that closed too.

Trip has just been, as I have said before, a good friend. It has definitely brought me joy this past year. I'm glad to know from social media that I'm not alone with this obsession! I agree that it's not everyone's cup of tea, but I have been pretty much overwhelmed. Cast is great, sets, costumes, lighting and what can I say about the music? I lost my sister 5 years ago at the age of 58 from pancreatic cancer. As I was sitting watching the show one day it dawned on me that that is probably why I have returned so many times. So much of the music was "her" music. While it made me cry often, it also made me feel closer to her.

I will miss it but am so glad the producers had such faith in this show that it lasted 10 months- even after some bad reviews and bad word-of-mouth.

I've said this before too, I hope you all find that special show that you feel compelled to go back to again and again. It's a great feeling. Especially when it hits you from out of the blue.

This reminds me of years ago I struck up a conversation with someone sitting at the Bar at Song Of Singapore. We got talking about theater and I mentioned Rockabye Hamlet. He told me he had played in the orchestra. I offered to make him a copy on cassette (remember those) of a live recording of the show. He was really effusive about it . I delivered it to him as he was in the band @ song (was taking a break when we spoke). He than sent me a thank you note. Of his time with Rockabye he said: As General Patton said " A criminal waste of fine infantry"

Saw the show tonight. Nothing to add, but it's basically whatever else has said it was. It's campy and trashy, but mildly entertaining. My only question is WTF with the casting. Save for a couple, the voices are not .. voices I need to hear singing pop music... I mean, this is the best you could get? There were no powerhouse voices, and everyone seemed to be struggling with the music, which is pretty simple. The dancers were all fabulous.

The show was obviously directed by an older gay man...

Darlene Love was in beautiful voice. She wails and just owns it. You could tell it was her first show as the lights were often not on her, or an ensemble member had to lead her off the stage, or move her over. Also, and maybe I'm wrong, but I think there must be promoters at the edge of the stage because she often stayed in certain places and was obviously looking down. Still, she managed the sell the songs because she's a freaking pro and a beast.

Oh totally! She sold me on it regardless.

Ha, yeah, that ship has sailed, unfortunately. I don't think it had much to do with the rights to the songs, as we did one for Wonderettes (and getting the rights to do covers is easier than you might think), but for whatever reason, they decided not to do one. C'est la vie!
