Michael Longoria! That would also be nice! HAHA
Oh, Jim Dale is also fantastic. But I'd rather see Rooney win.

you are all so sweet -- I think Mano is wonderful too - and he has a larger role (that is one of my favorite things about that show - the fact that it's from his point of view in a way).
I just would love to win simply so i can thank all the people in my life who have been so wonderful and loyal... I couldn't do it in the playbill bio... so that's the other best way to do it!
I also wish you could all hear me sing Tenor... it's vey different, but I think you'd be surprised by that too... people don't expect that part of my voice to be so dark... I am just lucky - I get to sing a lot of songs out there as a result :)

Hey, it's true, he does have a larger role. And it's very much to your credit that even though you don't appear during the first act, and that this is SUCH an ecclectic cast, you manage to completely steal the show.
I'd love to hear you sing Tenor. I can't even IMAGINE what that must be like!
And, well, if you DO end stealing Mano's award, I guess I'll be happy for ya... (ah, I kid! Nothing but love over here. For real)
Are you SURE you're not eligible for Featured ACTRESS in a musical? Much less conflict for us in that category... hehe

What with Cyndi...Now I have an emotional conflict.

Sounds exciting! Early June, I hope, so I can check it out (I'm going to España in mid to late June...why I just said that, or why anyone would care, who knows?)
And BSo, I'm with Cindy all the way. Unless Donna Lynne and/or Lauren get a nomination, in which case....eech...conflict...

Chica - you know Cyndi's all over it!
I will be sad if I have to choose between Cyndi and Felicia!
Though the choice is obvioso (that doesn't look right)
P.S. Chica, pensaba que no te gustaban los españoles.

Cyndi really deserves this one. And the choice is "obvio", drop the so
No me agradan mucho los españoles (que, pá colmo, son tós unos bellacos...and not in a good way...). Pero mi hermana vive en España. Y el país sí me gusta mucho. Así que la voy a ir a visitar.

I don't understand all this Felicia love...I was most impressed by the performance of Elizabeth Withers-Mendes as Shug Avery. The emotional core, and the only part that's written to have some sort of comprehensible arc. Fields is good given her material, but I can't help but compare her to Oprah - who should have won the Oscar in 1985 - and will never be topped.
Also, having just seen THE CAINE MUTINY COURT-MARSHALL, Zeljko Ivanek gives a brilliant performance - he may be the Featured Actor in a Play frontrunner...he's brilliant.

Then come to Spain, join the fun! My sis lives in Salamanca. The night life there is INSANE!!! Just...crazy, crazy fun. And we mostly hang out with the Italians, Brazilians, Mexicans and Colombians.
This became a thread jack...
So...um...yeah, Tony Awards! Whoo!

Zeljko Ivanek was my favorite part of Pillowman! I'm glad to hear he's great in Caine Mutiny Court Martial; I can't wait to see it!
And P.S. Awake and Sing should and will get a nom for Best Play Revival. It's INCREDIBLE.

Posted: 4/15/06 at 1:01amIt's nice to see I'm not the only one who doesn't get the Felicia hype. I saw absolutely nothing special about her performance.
#67re: Very early Tony predictions
Posted: 4/15/06 at 2:29amI liked AWAKE AND SING, but I thought it was a very, very flawed and uneven production.
#68re: Very early Tony predictions
Posted: 4/15/06 at 2:51amReally munk? I thought it was so genuine. Maybe I was just really struck by the material, since I'd actually never read the play before. I really like every other play I've read by Clifford Odets though, so maybe that biased my opinion. Did you post a review somewhere? I really would be interested to know what you thought.

THIS WILL BE THE FIRST YEAR THAT A NON-MUSICAL COMEDY WINS BEST MUSICAL SINCE 2001!!! YAAAAAAAAAAAAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
MUSICAL
The Color Purple
(Personally though, I think it should be The Woman in White, but the chances of this are very slim)
TCP is the best of most of what's running right now. Tarzan, Wedding Singer, Drowsy Chaperone...c'mone. I'm not saying they're not entertaining, I haven't seen them, but you can tell they're not best of the season quality.
PLAY
Rabbit Hole?
IU'm not sure, I haven't really followed plays this season as much as I have in the past.
LEAD ACTRESS/MUSICAL---this is a close one, so...
Patti Lupone would win if the judges want to give her a welcome back to musical theatre, but from what I've heard on the recording, she's nothing great compared to her concert performance.
LaChanze is the likely winner of these three because...
Maria Friedman may win (and should win) because of her dedication on and off stage. She gave an emotionally heart wrenching performance while battling cancer at the same time. Judges may honor her for that, but he chances may have been depleted with WIW's untimely death.
LEAD ACTOR in a MUSICAL
John Lloyd Young because he seems to be everyone's favorite this year.
LEAD ACTOR in a PLAY
David Schwimmer
David Wilmot
Nathan Lane
Ralph Fiennes
John Slattery
----tough to tell right now, all very good, but Nathan Lane won't have a chance because all these other men have more complex performances.
LEAD ACTRESS in a PLAY
Julia Roberts is a likely choice because of her celebritydom.
MUSICAL REVIVAL
Sweeney Todd, but we'll have to see how Threepenny Opera fairs.
PLAY REVIVAL
A Touch of the Poet
The Caine Mutiny Court Marshall
Faith Healer
Absurd Person Singular
---Tough call.
FEATURED ACTOR in a MUSICAL
????????
FEATURED ACTRESS IN A MUSICAL
????????
SCORE
THE WOMAN IN WHITE
THE COLOR PURPLE
---it's between these two, for sure. nothing else is original or complex or emotional enough. They can't ignore art this yera like they usually do.
BOOK
THE COLOR PURPLE
THE WOMAN IN WHITE
-again, it's between these two, but TCP is will most likley win.
SET/MUSICAL
THE COLOR PURPLE
THE DROWSY CHAPERONE
THE WOMAN IN WHITE
TARZAN
------WIW may win just to commend it for what it was trying, and, for the most part, succeeding in doing. Pioneering something new and fresh.
COSTUMES/MUSICAL
------Not sure yet, I'll have to investigate more.
LIGHTS/MUSICAL
----again, I need to investigate more.
DIRECTOR/MUSICAL
JOHN DOYLE for sure because of his fresh and original staging.
DIRECTOR/PLAY
Daniel Sullivan
Wilson Milam
Nicholas Hytner
Jerry Zaks
???
FEATURED ACTRESS in a PLAY
???????
FEATURED ACTOR in a PLAY
????????

I barely agree with any of your predictions, but especially:
a. Julia Roberts has no chance in hell of winning Lead Actress in a play- have you SEEN Three Days of Rain? Or read anything about it?
b. You didn't even acknowledge Jersey Boys for Best Musical, and most people think they will win it
c. Just because something is comedy, doesn't mean it isn't art... Plus, The Color Purple score has been judged as wholly artless and untheatrical
d. Woman in White will never win for Best Set... it barely has a chance of being nominated for anything at all

Musical - The Color Purple
Revival - Sweeney
Actor - Cerveris
Actress - Patti
Supporting Actor - Mano
Supporting Actress - Donna Lynn Champlin (It's a longshot but she was brilliant)
Lighting - Lestat (I must mention this on every Tony board because the lighting was brilliant)

Posted: 4/15/06 at 1:04pmI'm really surprised that noone think The Drowsy Chaperone will take stop musical. It's a love letter to the community. It's a show written for Tony voters - and with the Tony's hatred in the past few years for jukebox musicals, I really don't see why anyone thinks Jersey Boys is going to win. I personally feel it's The Drowsy Chaperone vs. The Color Purple.

The nominees seem pretty predictable as of now. The winners are what are confusing me.
I think it will go a little like this:
THE COLOR PURPLE:
-Best Musical
-Best Actress (LaChanze)
-Best Score
-Best Set Design
-Best Lighting Design
THE PAJAMA GAME:
-Best Costume Design
-Best Choreography
JERSEY BOYS:
-Best Book
-Best Actor (John Lloyd Young)
SWEENEY TODD:
-Best Musical Revival
-Best Featured Actor (Manoel Feliciano)
-Best Orchestrations
-Best Director
THE THREEEPENNY OPERA:
-Best Featured Actress (Cyndi Lauper)
THE HISTORY BOYS:
-Best Play
-Best Director
FAITH HEALER:
-Best Revival of a Play
-Best Actress (Cherry Jones) (She could be very well beaten out by Sarah Jones for BRIDGE & TUNNEL considering she won last year.....)
BRIDGE & TUNNEL:
-Best Actress (Sarah Jones) (See note next to Jones above)
THE ODD COUPLE:
-Best Actor (Nathan Lane)
RABBIT HOLE:
-Best Featured Actress (Tyne Daly)
-Best Set Design
***Best Featured Actor in a play is up in the air; as are Best Costume Design for a play and Best Lighting Design for a play.
As far as nominations for Lestat, Lennon, In My Life, Tarzan et al go, I think that Lestat will probably get a nod for Set Design and Lighting; and Tarzan for its Sets and Leading Man (Strickland) but that's about it. In My Life and Lennon will not win nor will they be nominated for anything. I also have to say some of these predictions are a shot in the dark as I haven't seen a lot of shows yet this year. For some reason, I think a win for The Drowsy Chaperone in any category is going to be hard. Same for The Wedding Singer.

Posted: 4/15/06 at 4:20pmI think Christian Hoff from Jersey Boys will be nominated for best featured actor (and maybe Daniel Reichard too); perhaps Chester Gregory or Shuler Hensley from Tarzan will get nods in that category too. But I DON'T think from what I've seen and read that Tarzan's sets will be nominated for set design.
