1. The NYTimes is read by everyone, but not everyone reads the A&L section. I would hazard a guess that those who do, could understand the add.
2. I don't think anyone in a major Broadway revival of Gypsy would be suprised to see an add with only Mama Rose.
With Clay Aiken in Spamalot, all of Broadway is singing a collective "There! Right! There!" -Me-
"Not Barker, Todd is the only person I've ever known who could imitate Katherine Hepburn...in print." -nmartin-

Dang. I really wanna see "Wow Wow Wow" starring Patti LuPone as Momma Rose.
Don't you mean you wanna see "WOW WOW WOW PATTI LUPONE GYSPY"? 'Cuz that's what all my dumb friends think it's called after seeing this ad and the marquee.
But really, I think people will understand that this is an ad for Gypsy. If you're the ad's intended audience (i.e. any human being from anywhere, theater-savvy or not, who might be interested in seeing this show) you're guaranteed to read past the WOW WOW WOW and look at some of the quotes--the most prominent of which mention the show by name. So even if you're still too dumb to find the title in the bottom center next to the star of the show, I think it's safe to say you'll find it elsewhere. Sheesh.

People like BrodyFosse and A Director/BertAndrew like to practice "Facile Cynicism" or "Knee-Jerk Negativity."
You simply log onto an Internet chat board, enter a thread in which posters are sharing their enthusiasm and proceed to post negative opinions as if they were facts.
The Facile Cynic THINKS that these negative opinions are "smarter" than everyone else's, which of course is not at all true, and that it's fun to deflate the enthusiasm that was being shared.
Inevitably what happens is that the Facile Cynic is simply thought of as a "creep" or an "asShole."
This generally extends into real life, as the Facile Cynic enters conversations at cocktail parties or dinners and proceeds to deliver his or her knee-jerk negative pronouncements, always expecting to be thought of as "brilliant," which, sadly, never occurs.
Facile Cynics tend to be chronically friendless and prematurely bitter.
They are, in the words of the old song, more to be pitied than censured.

And WOW, is Gypsy really that good? I thought people were liking South Pacific as a better revival.

Posted: 4/5/08 at 6:14pmWOW WOW WOW I didn't even say anything and I got mentioned! For the record, I think its a great ad. I just wish the photo was of Patti eating the live lobster.

Posted: 4/5/08 at 6:51pmThat's what I mean, A Director. You think people think you're clever because you repeat Musto's lobster comment as a negative when he said it as a positive, but it just makes you seem bitter, nasty and really really creepy.

Zzzzz Zzzzz I am not A DIRECTOR.
And...I KNOW that Musto mean that in a positive way. Geeze!
I remain, the role of Rose should NOT be played as though one is eating a live lobster.
Evita has NO HEART as Rose. She is just eating live lobsters.

Bert--can I ask you a favor? A personal favor?
Could you please STOP posting your same boring negative feelings over and over and over and over again in these celebratory threads?
We KNOW how you feel and we'd all appreciate it if you would just stop posting in our threads?
Could you do that for us, Bert?

Joey...can I ask you a personal favor?
Can you please resolve that I am not A DIRECTOR? I have said that a million times, but
you continue to associate me to the person who posts under that name. Could you do that please?
Also, could you please let me have my opinion without call me names?
Finally, could you understand that not everyone likes the same things that you like and that these boards are created to for EVERYONE to voice opinions? When you say OUR threads, you mean OUR threads.. Its for everyone, not just for you and Evita fans.
Can you do that for me? At the VERY least, please do not associate me with A DIRECTOR . Its not me.
Thank you

"A Director," I love seeing naysayers like you pathetically scrambling to sneer at this undeniable triumph.
It's fabulous that there are only quotes about Patti - GYPSY is not an ensemble show like COMPANY or even SWEENEY TODD. A production only succeeds or fails on the merits of its Rose.
A 2 page NYT ad is most certainly not for Patti's ego. Producers don't shell out that kind of money for any reason other than to sell tickets. The point of this ad is to display the plethora of good press this production has received, mostly for its most important element, Patti's performance.
What did you think? That Patti paid for this herself? LOL

Joey - Why is it so difficult for you to understand that bretandrew2 and I are TWO different people? We keep telling you over and over, but for some reason you are unable to grasp this simple idea. Even for someone like you, the number 2 shouldn't be that difficult for you to wrap your mind around. To be generous, I assume you have a bit more intelligence than a turnip. On the other hand, if you fail to understand that bretandrew2 and I are different people, I begin to think the turnip is smarter.
I am aware that without a good Rose, a production of GYPSY will suffer. Nevertheless, in the reviews I've read, critics have also praised Boyd Gaines and Laura Benanti. I think it's telling that the producers couldn't find the space in a two page ad to mention Ms LuPone's co-stars.
Ads for August: Osage County include pictures of the entire cast. Ads for Xanadu feature pictures of Kerry Butler and Cheyenne Jackson.
To save money, the producers could fire the rest of the cast and GYPSY could take place in Ms.LuPone's mind!

AUGUST is an ensemble piece.
XANADU is has two co-stars.
GYPSY is written with one star.

I have no particular feelings about this production or Patti LuPone, but Boyd Gaines and Laura Benanti's reviews were at least as good as those received by LuPone. It just seems to me to be bad form that they weren't given at least one quote each, given the praise they both received.
OTOH, I've seen agents require by contract that their client get a quote in a quote ad if any other performer gets a quote. I guess Gaines and Benanti's agents didn't do that, so sucks to be them, I guess.
