#1Wait... does Susan Boyle sound like...
Posted: 10/8/12 at 9:32pmI looked to see if someone else had started something on this-- but, I just listened to Susan's new demo-- does anyone think she sounds disturbingly similar to Bernadette Peters? Like, I am shocked. Please don't tell Bernadette I said anything.

Posted: 10/8/12 at 10:44pmI wish Susan Boyle's 15 minutes were up. I despise her untrained caterwauling. She is the blandest song stylist ever.

Seriously, can no one else hear that? I mean, I know I'm not crazy... am I? Maybe it's my speakers...

Posted: 10/8/12 at 11:18pmOk, I didn't hear it when I first listened to it, but after reading this thread, I just had to go back and listen to it. She really does kinda sound like younger Bernadette at times. If you ask me, that's a step in the right direction for poor Susan, who I also feel is as dull as a brick wall. She got lucky. She's got a decent voice, but she's such a boring performer.

Her new showtunes record is dreadful. Run a mile, fellow BWWers.
You have been warned.

Did you catch her on DWTS a few weeks ago? Something was terribly wrong and Donny Osmond was holding her throughout their duet.
The woman has problems.

Posted: 11/14/12 at 9:44pmI saw that. The woman does not belong in show-business.

Posted: 11/14/12 at 10:02pmMy mom has Susan's CD and I heard her listening to it. Thinking it was Bernadette I told her I hadn't known she was such a fan of hers(enough to own a CD at least). She corrected me and I could tell afterwards that it was indeed Susan, not Bernadette. But I know where you're coming from.

She's currently singing "The Winner Takes It All" all over television, and unless I'm wrong, has blown the lyric at least twice. The taped music just played on recently, until Matt Lauer came upon her to rescue the moment if not Boyle. She seems inadequately prepared, and it makes the performance uncomfortable to watch. On the other hand, two years ago she sang the old Crowded House song with a choir on Oprah and was simple and deeply moving. She's wildly erratic, as one would be without training or real experience.
PS: I'm no snob, but "The Winner Takes It All" on her first album of musical theater pieces? Even if Meryl sang it on film (and tried to turn it into Rose's Turn) couldn't she skip the juke stuff?

Have nothing against her personally and am still glad she found success, but it's so sad that success was used as a tool to ruin certain musicals and fatten bank accounts in the way that is has.
Even more sad is the collective shoulder shrugging..."it's ONLY a musical."
Musical theatre aches for the passionate folks who founded and for those who developed it well into the 90s. Since the '00s, it has been a sad whimper of what we know Broadway is capable of. Yet, there is a shallow snubbing of all things from Broadway's past. This community is soooooo strange, LOL.

I was just listening to the most fantastic "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" that came on Pandora. I didn't know who it was but I immediately thought of Jane Monheit and yes - although I realized it was not her - Bernadette because there is something there of Bernadette's - maybe not a big resemblance, but something in the timbre at certain spots. Of course, it was Boyle. And it's brilliant.
And so I don't think Patrick Dennis, you are completely out to lunch on this.
And now I"m listening to the whole c.d. on mob and there are places in Send in the Clowns where she sounds very much like Bernadette. Only places perhaps but very much like her.
