Did you notice that during Catherine Zeta-Jone's performance there was a glitch and she briefly stopped singing? Was her singing dubbed? What about all the other "live" performances? Were the casts singing-along to pre-recorded tracks?
Sorry, I meant to say lip-synching not dubbed.

lol CZJ was probably just 'acting'. I highly doubt her singing was dubbed (they could have chosen a much better take if so :P).
But there were claims of other dubbing.
There was definitely some dubbing going on. Not in any of the "stand and sing" moments, but in some of the dancing/singing production numbers. Several performers didn't lip sync very well, either.
If there was any dubbing going on it should have been done to Lea Michele.

I don't know if it was dubbing, but the voices in the Fela portion of the opening number didn't match the singers on stage. That might have just been an offstage mic, though.
Yea, I noticed the Fela opening number, also.

CZJ
seemed lipsynched....and whats with her head going back and forth all throughtout the song ....very very distacting
her voice sounded horse as hell
I felt that American Idiot at least used a backtrack..that sounded really perfect when the ensemble all came together....suspiciously perfect.

if i remember correctly from previous years, the ensemble people record vocal tracks and they lip synch and only the main people singing in the song are actually mic-ed and sing live.

Was it live or was it Memorex? Only her beautician knows.
I think that Matt Morrison was lip synching.
Dubbing is done in post production. It is a technique where new audio is 'looped' or used to 'replace' the original audio, etc.
The Tony Awards is telecast 'live' with a 7 second delay. It is humanly impossible to 'dub' anything with a 'live' show.
Lip-synching is a term used when a person moves their lips to match a pre-recording. Singers lip-synch to pre-recorded music, etc.
Learn the difference. Its quite delicious.
And-a... no. The Tony Awards singing was not dubbed. Some performers lip-synched.
well, he sure was out of breath after that dance break, so i don't know about that...

You beat me to it. Matt Morrison was clearly out of breath at some moments during the number. Do you imagine he was on a treadmill while recording?
And...most of the shows have recordings that they can use. Would they pay to send Matt into a studio to record something that would only be used to lip sync to? Doesn't make fiscal sense to me.
Okay...
If CZJ was lip-syncing, why would did she still sound so terrible? Wouldn't it stand to reason that if she were lip-syncing she'd sound better than usual, and not worse?

Matt wasn't part of a show, he was independent of any of the current shows running. Plus, yes they do have recordings in case an actor loses his voice. The Tony songs have to fit into a certain timeframe which is not always equal to what is done onstage or on the cast album.
Yeah, CZJ definitely sounded kind of ill, I doubt if she was lip syncing (unless they used a really horrible recording).
If Catherine was lip syncing why in the world would they have used a track where she messed up the lyrics?
in response to Marquise, were we not a fan of Lea's singing?

I thought that Lea Michele's version of "Don't Rain On My Parade" was excellent. While not as good as Barbra's, the arrangement and her timing were precise. On the other hand, the guy singing "All I Need Is The Girl" from Gypsy was off-key. Others I've spoken to agree that Michele was great.
I performed at the TONYS a number of years ago as a part of a huge ensemble and we were not dubbed at all. CZJ was most certainly not dubbed...but it's a pity she wasn't. Girlfriend needed all the help she could get.
Her timing precise?!!! Homegirl couldn't keep up with the music!!! This coming from someone who JUST LEARNED of Bernadette Peters' involvement in ALNM and refers to Matthew Morrison as "that guy". Okay now I'm just gonna GO OFF!
Not as good as Barbra's is quite the understatement. It never came close! It was a friggin' total RIP OFF. Instead of putting her own personal stamp on it she went and did a pale Streisand imitation. I've seen DRAG QUEENS do better Streisand imitations than what Miss Michele ATTEMPTED at the Tonys.
Again, she raked the song through the coals, stomped on it and left it to die! She desecrated a classic Broadway showstopper.
I like Lea Michele. I saw SPRING AWAKENING twice because I liked her so much, but just because I like a performer doesn't mean I'm going to be blind to the fact when they F*CK something up and she really F*CKED UP.
HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE!!!!!
Oh, did I mention she should have been dubbed?

I missed the part where Lea Michele was bad at the Tonys. She struggled momentarily keeping with the music at the beginning. I'd assume singing in the aisles and starting over the applause for the previous performance might have had something to do with that. Her pitch was otherwise spot-on, despite one or two missed notes (one of which was sustained, but she found it in good time and covered it perfectly.) She showed that she has fire as a live performer (something that should, of course, be honed if she plays Fanny Brice) and that she can sing that song and fill a big theatre. I'll note that her rendition at the Tonys sounded startlingly similar to her recording used for GLEE, which shows that she's got the talent to sell a song just as well live as she does in the recording studio. What a ludicrous statement... to claim that Michele "desecrated" the song! I don't know what Tonys you were watching, but her performance was far from that. I assume you accidentally flipped to some of your own home videos of yourself performing to have viewed such a "desecration."

Here you go
I think she sounds wonderful. Bad bangs, bad tattoo. Great vocals.
