Kino****a Group, Kumiko Yoshii, and Michael Wolk announced today simultaneously in New York and Los Angeles that The Karate Kid is being developed for Broadway as a new musical. Based on the smash hit Columbia Pictures motion picture, and featuring a book by the film's screenwriter Robert Mark Kamen and music and lyrics by Drew Gasparini, The Karate Kid will be directed by renowned Japanese director Amon Miyamoto and choreographed by MTV VMA nominees Keone and Mari Madrid.
I am really excited for this!
However, I hope it doesn't share the Rocky musical's fate...
Will they at least keep "Glory of Love" by Peter Cetera?
I could see this being either really excellent or a total trainwreck. I don't predict that it'll fall anywhere in the middle - it'll be one of the two extremes. Regardless, I'm interested and excited.
I think that there's a lot of fun stuff they could do with blending traditional karate into the choreography.

"Glory of Love" was from The Karate Kid Part II.
Maybe they can find a way to use "Kung Fu Fighting," instead.
Sorry, this sounds AWFUL. (And I adored the film.)
If it's good, every Japanese-American (hell, realistically speaking, every Asian) musical theatre actor of a certain age will have a potential comeback role.
and it will be huge in the ever growing Asian musical theatre market--and cruise ships.
So who gets the first crack at the role? George Takei? Daniel Dae Kim? BD Wong?

Is this reminding anyone else of Andrew Rannells and It's Karate, COMMA, Kid: The Musical?

The upcoming Broadway-bound musical stage adaptation of The Karate Kid has set its world premiere dates! The musical will premiere at STAGES St. Louis as part of their 2022 season, before bowing on Broadway.
The limited, pre-Broadway engagement will begin performances at STAGES St. Louis on Wednesday, May 25, 2022 and run through Sunday, June 26 at The Ross Family Theatre at The Kirkwood Performing Arts Center.
Based on the smash hit Columbia Picturesmotion picture and featuring a book by Robert Mark Kamen (modeled after his own semi-autobiographical screenplay) and music and lyrics by Drew Gasparini, The Karate Kid will be directed by the renowned Japanese director Amon Miyamoto (Pacific Overtures) and choreographed by MTV VMA nominees Keone and Mari Madrid.
Drew Gasparini isn’t really doing himself many favors by going on the defensive on twitter right out of the gate.

At least there are some Asian people on the creative team. I wish they were involved in the book or music but hopefully they can help influence the story nonetheless. I don't have any attachment to the property so this just feels like Rocky again.
