Post-Tony Thoughts

JSquared2 said: "John Adams said: "Now I can look forward to the Jimmy Awards (June 22nd) which I value even more than the Tonys because any "political" elements are at a minimum. The Jimmys provide me with opportunities to watch careers grow (case in point -Andrew Barth Feldman)RE: "Schmigadoon", this statement from producerChristine Schwarzman raised some questions:“I think I should start by thanking Apple TV for canceling the third season of Schmigadoon the TV show because without them we ...

Deadline: Early Days Of 'SNL' To Be Portrayed In New Off Broadway Play

Sep 11, 2025 — 11:09:50 AM

darquegk said: "TheQuibbler said: "I’ma huge fan of SNL but after all the 50th anniversary specials and the aforementioned film, I can’t be the only who’s SNL’d out. There’s not much more mystery to unravel here."As a proud member of Quaid Army, I find myself mostly in agreement with Seth Myers's catchphrase "An Golden Era:" the show leans far too hard on the mythology of the first five years, when thoseweren't truly "THE shining golden era" that deifies itself and eclipses everything else. Are attitudes towards bootleg recordings changing?

Aug 7, 2025 — 10:02:54 AM

As someone on the younger side who has only seen this through the lens of pre-COVID into the shutdown and the years afterward, I feel like there's actually been a recent growth of an anti-bootleg sentiment among people who five years ago would have been all for the extra access. Part of this is from a smart reframing of bootlegs by actors recently, including Casey Likes and Alina Mayagoitia, as a consent issue rather than an access issue - which is personal for both of these performers specif...

MAYBE HAPPY ENDING Reviews

binau said: "I don't think Darren is single-handily selling all these tickets but I would suggest a familiar name and face can help influence a buying decision in combination with other factors (positive word of mouth, reviews, awards etc)."I do also think there's something to be said for the changing of his target demographic. While he's definitely still most popular from Glee, the 13-year-olds of 2010 who watched him on the show are 28 now, and with the right promotion, they definitely have...

Wishful Thinking - HUNCHBACK?

Jul 26, 2025 — 12:41:15 AM

I just saw a BEAUTIFUL production of The Hunchback of Notre Dame in Orlando and got to thinking about Disney on Broadway's current output. The shows they seem to be focusing the most on are the Beauty and the Beast tour (which has not gotten great word of mouth) and Hercules (which has now had four major productions and is still getting mixed reviews, especially on its pacing). This is very much just wishful thinking and not any inside scoop, but with other in-development works like The Great...

New play PF opening on Broadway this fall?

Alright I need to admit something: every time this thread pops up, I look at it for like five seconds, thinking, "...Prima Facie?" before realizing what show the thread is about

LuPone on McDonald

SmokeyLady said: "Did anyone catch Jon Stewart referencing the Lupone scandal last night on Daily Show? It was a very quick reference and no.. I can't remember what he said but I got a kick out of it. Also.. now that the "open letter" has started being ridiculed, have you noticed how theater tok and social media has not mentioned a word?"I also noticed this! It was in the context of M*sk going on CBS Sunday Morning for his exit interview from the administration, which Stewart clearly thought ...

BOOP! x Tony Awards

Jun 3, 2025 — 8:35:27 PM

Mr. Wormwood said: "I think that's a weak argument. Where was the outrage when Dorian Harewood and Maryann Plunkett were nominated in Lead last year and didn't perform? There's only gonna ever be a few in any given year because often it lines up to some degree with Musical or Revival nominees."Ok this made me curious about which shows got to perform after not being nominated for Best Musical or Revival, so I went back over the past 10 years to take a look:2016: On Your Feet - 1 nomination, fo...

BOOP! x Tony Awards

If she's not the only one, this argument is COMPLETELY moot.If she is the only one, it makes it feel icky and unfair, but again, that's the way the cookie crumbles. Sometimes there are great performances in subpar shows. It's not deeper than that."The only other one who wouldn't be performing is James Monroe Iglehart for A Wonderful World, but that show closed several mont...

J.K. Rowling uses Harry Potter wealth to fund anti-transgender organization

SeanD2 said: "There should be an open letter from the theater community demanding that any actor who has been in Cursed Child be disinvited from any industry event due to their support of Rowling.sarcasm, obviously"Don't know if this is still the case, but there was a time immediately post-shutdown where CC actually had the best record of almost any show on Broadway of hiring trans and nonbinary performers. (I think the only show that might have even been close was Jagged Little Pill, and we ...

BOOP! x Tony Awards

BJR said: "Interesting. Is there a recent example of them saying no to a show? Usually they want more performances, not less."IIRC, Joe Iconis said that when Be More Chill was on Broadway, the team approached the Tonys for a performance and got turned down. It would've been "Michael in the Bathroom" - one actor on stage and the most popular song in the show - and then he was upset when the number ended up getting turned into a parody sung by James Corden, Josh Groban, and Sara Bareilles, with...

Wayne Brady & Taye Diggs to join MOULIN ROUGE in July?

Apr 25, 2025 — 6:46:04 PM

My guess is the announcement's scheduled for a different day and got posted early? This is GREAT casting - I'm curious as to how much of a pull Wayne Brady's going to have, as I don't remember him being a big impact on sales for The Wiz (although they didn't use him a ton in the marketing I saw), but I love seeing seasoned theatre performers who have crossed over to film/TV return to Broadway! Stunt casting without the "stunt" of it all...And between the two of them plus Jordan and Soles, wou...

Out-Of-Left-Field Dream Casting?

Admittedly, the character is written and directed to be as blatantly "hey Andy, play this role please" as possible, but I'd still love to see it.I know he had a big career first in a dramatic period role earlier this year, but I didn't get to see it. Was he good?"That's the trailer I was watching! He looks great in it - hoping to watch the film soon and decide for sure. Glad to ...

Out-Of-Left-Field Dream Casting?

Nov 21, 2024 — 9:39:52 AM

Does anyone have any dream pairings of actor/role that people wouldn't expect? Like, a "just crazy enough to work" type scenario?I was watching the trailer for Lee yesterday and suddenly could not stop thinking of the idea of Andy Samberg doing Parade one day. He's interested in playing more dramatic roles, he has a huge vocal range that could be fine-tuned with some coaching, and although he's definitely older than the character of Leo, he's younger than Brent Carver was when he originated t...
