I would like to see it on Broadway, I think it would do very well at the box office.

It would probably do a lot of business but there are a lot of problems with this show. Primarily the book; it's absolutely atrocious. But the talents of people who were in the Vegas Company (like Ty Taylor) would be awesome to see on the Great White Way.

I don't think it will come to Broadway because they originally opted out broadway for vegas and look how it did there.

There will be a sit-down in Toronto opening next March. I think this is the best you can hope for.

Chevstriss, do you have any specifics for a Toronto production? ie. where and when? I've been waiting for this to come to Toronto for ages, but haven't heard anything.

It's moving in where Lord of the Rings closed. Casting will begin right after the holidays. They are hoping for an all Canadian cast, but I'm betting it doesn't work out that way.

That'll be awesome. I saw this show numerous times in London, and although the book isn't its selling point, it's just so much fun.
If watching is all you're going to do, then you're going to watch your life pass by without you.

Phantom is scheduled into the Princess of Wales until April (and has already been moved from the Canon) so it may be possible that it will take the Canon for a sitdown instead.

A March opening? Thats not that far off....why has no official announcement gone out yet? And why did PHANTOM move? I was hoping to see it again at the Canon for nostalga (how I miss the Toronto production...)

Bring Joey Calveri in as Galileo again....he was phenominal in Vegas!! I love this show!

Gah. If they have any sense at all, they'll jettison the book and make it just like MOVIN OUT, one song after another, so we dont have to deal with that idiotically thin premise for stringing the songs together.

I fell asleep at this show in London. I thought it couldn't be more boring. Its book is terrible.

agreed about the book, I read it and was like, uh uh "THIS DOSEN"T DO JUSTICE TO QUEEN!" the music is amazing of course, but i think that they should make a new Queen musical, with a good story, no futuristic crap
PS, when was this first performed? 80s? early 90s I want to say beacuse of how it is written.

Calling the book terrible is an understatement. It was Hot Feet bad.
And I like Jason Wooten, who was Galileo (in rotation with Tony Vincent) when I saw it. I'm glad he's found something much better to do.

We Will Rock You first opened in London in 2002. Just don't go expecting a coherent musical - as a celebration of Queens songs, it's a great night out, but as a fully fledged musical . . . no.

I saw the show in London in August and it was fantastic! Excellent Queen songs plus an awsome cast. Peter Johansson as Galileo was stellar.

But see, here's the sixty-four-thousand-dollar question: What made it fantastic? Two things, I bet: the songs and the performances. Not the book. Not the (what little there was of it) production design (pimped out street clothing as costumes and steel beams to support visible lights? Yeah, that's original thinking...).
If the US producers have any smarts at all, they'll focus on the first two and seriously rethink the latter two. Audiences may be gullible fools when it comes to dropping serious money for tickets, but I have a feeling that no matter how great the songs, those last two elements will kill the run in less than four months.

I didn't think it was capable of someone with an ounce of brains or taste to actually think this show was good.
Wow, you learn something new every day.
I hope this show stays far, far away from New York City. It is one of the most unfortunate creations I have ever seen.

The script has never been the show's strong point, but it was intially stronger - yes the plot was the same (basically) but it was more fleshed out. Due to the author's incessant tinkering, chunks of exposition have been cut, and many of the best jokes replaced with reality TV mentions leaving the show as a few (often poor) gags between songs.
It is and always has been the performances that make the show. I first saw the show in June 2002 with the OLC, and they were amazing - hitting everynote, radiating energy and enthusiasm. The music is awesome and very well delivered. I've seen it more times than I care to mention (Ok, about 9) with various different casts, and I still prefer the original cast of Tony Vincent and Hannah Jane Fox and co. Some casts can have a tendancy to play the script too pantomime, and this just emphasises the problems that are inherant in the concept. Also towards the end of contracts, the outgoing cast can have a tendancy to just walk through their roles. There are definately a few culprits in the current cast - people who have been there too long and just look bored on stage. Some of the alterations that were made for the Vegas show and subsequently introduced in the West End are just ridiculous.
It's a big crowd pleaser. You can get swept away on a tide of rock concert like music and forget about the plot. In London its a huge tourist draw - the demand for tickets when it posted its closing notices forced another extension - due to the huge amounts of Queen fans there are in this country. Whether that would translate across the pond is a different story. It was mauled by the critics in London, and was near to posting closing notices before the word of mouth got around. Whether you'd get word of mouth on the same levels in NY I don't know. It's also quite cunningly stage managed with special events for various landmarks with special performers etc. The Vegas version can't really be seen as indicative - it was a shortened version (even less plot!) and probably over priced for something coming in with no Broadway pedigree and reputation and without a star name headlining it (much as I love Tony Vincent he's not a name) and thus it didn't last.
With all that said about the script, I am still told that it is widely superiour to the one for Tonight's the Night (also by Ben Elton) which premiered just after and had a much shorter run.

Swept away in the tide of the rock concert?
All I kept thinking was "SHUT. UP."
This whole "The show sucks and the book is horrible but the songs are good and the actors are really talented so the show is amazing" is what will lead to the downfall of musical theatre.

I'm not saying that everyone does, I'm just staying that the way the finale is structured with We Will Rock You, We Are the Champions and Bohemian Rhapsody essentially being sung to the audience rather than to further the plot encourages a Rock Concert feel hence the enthusiasm of the audiences.
I know the show is not high culture - hell it's not even attempting to be high culture, Roger Taylor is on record as saying that he hates musicals and just don't see the point of people bursting into song. It's just so naff (i don't have the direct quote so I've paraphrased). Maybe thats part of the appeal - they're not catering to normal musical lovers like you Munk, they're aiming at all those people who wouldn't normally go and see a musical because its "lame" or "sad" but liked Queen.
Musical theatre will always survive. Infact 'Rock you doesn't even tend to describe itself as a musical it self defines as a "Rock Theatrical."
I've grown up - there are other shows I'd rather see now - I loved SITPWG at the Wyndhams and wish I could be nearer London so I could go and see the Last 5 Years - but I'm alomst embarrassed to say that it was seeing WWRY that made me want to go back and see more shows and I know I'm not the only one.
