There are better singers than Patti LuPone.
The cast cds of South Pacific, Passing Strange, In The Heights, A Catered Affair and Cry Baby will all be available before Gypsy.

Impressive range, incredible connection to the character/lyric, fantastic tone, distinguishable voice and yet diverse and adaptable, incredible staying power (I saw her twice when she was sick and couldn't tell the difference), obvious passion and love for what she's singing, no definable break in her voice, perfection in many genres, not to mention more stage presence than i thought possible... Need me to go on?!?
She can make you fall in love with a stage mom who has potentially ruined her kids lives, a woman who chops people up and makes pies out of them, and pretty much every role she's ever played...
That's talent.

And yet no real argument as to why she's so talented. A great range? no. A Great vocal prowess that spans different styles? Nope, a great interpreter with actual examples to back it up? Never heard that.
Nope, just blind faith that she's "incredible" and "the best" ad nauseum, but no real arguments.
Heh. Whatever.
Get. A. Life.

And? If it were feesible, I feel every show on or off Broadway should be recorded. No matter how bad. It's not about the shows being perfect, or the actors being stunning, it's about not letting pieces of history fade away.
Just think if 'Lolita, My Love' had a commercially released recording, don't you think somebody might have wanted to get the rights to revive it by now?

There has been an announcement. Whether you think if "official" enough is up to you.
Time/Life is not a label devoted exclusively to cast recordings (unlike Ghostlight/Sh-K-Book or Sony-Bmg's Masterworks Broadway label) so they may not have a staff member churning out press releases and doing mass e-mails. Max Preeo of the CASTREC group is well connected with the labels and he reported that GYPSY was set to be recorded and unless something happens and that gets changed May 5 & 6 are the dates.
Why you need anything more "official" than that is beyond me. Even if there was an "official" announcement, plans could still change. (Look at LESTAT.)
The sniping about how long it has taken RING OF FIRE or the ANNIE set to get released doesn't seem to take into account the fact that GYPSY is in a theatre on Broadway NOW! The others are not. SO expect Time/Life to put an effort into getting the CD mixed, mastered, pressed and shipped in time for the Tony Awards. (This is not unprecedented. Sony recorded THE LIFE May 5, 1997 and had the CD in stores 4 weeks later.)
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

Posted: 4/29/08 at 5:27pmI just received an e-mail from Noyd Gaines. The cast of GYPSY will definitely be recording the show next Monday and Tuesday. I guess that makes the dates May 5th and 6th.

I totally agree! As much as I love theater and the fact that it is live and right there in front of you, sometimes you want more than just the memory of a great performance. For me a cast recording is a great way to replay what I saw and relive the experience. And for those shows I am not able to see it makes me feel like I didn't completely miss out on the experience.
Anyways, Dollypop, thanks for the announcement. Can't wait to hear the finished product!
