Ruthie Henshall does that weird jaw-clinch and then sings through her teeth. I'm convinced she has TMJ.
And Barbara Walsh does this scary staring thing to the audience that my friends and I dubbed as the "Barbara Walsh Death Stare."
Perhaps it was just her portayal of Joanne in "Company." I have not seen her in anything else; but it was scary.
Patti LuPone definitely takes the cake for atrange faicial movements. I love it. :)
Hugh Panaro is a lovely, lovely man, but he does this thing when he sings where, like, all of the bones and muscles in his face shift around and rearrange themselves in a really kind of disturbing way. I got to interview him when he came to sing at my school, and I was just mesmerized by how much he resembled a T-Rex.

EEK! The second time I saw the show I got front row rush tickets...and she just started staring at me. Or in my direction. And it was kind of scary...
Shoshana Bean was a little hard to watch sing during Wicked.
Tony Roberts does this weird thing where he wobbles his jaw back and forth. It makes it look like it's dislocated or something.
Drives me nuts because it's so distracting! You can see it in the Xanadu preview video.
Kyle Riabko definitely makes some interesting faces, but he makes those same faces in real life. I don't think he knows how to take a normal picture.
Also, it could just be me, but I was highly distracted by Mandy Gonzalez. She only sings out of one side of her mouth. It really shouldn't bother me as much as it does, but it does.

When Sutton Foster smiles, her right eyebrow goes up an inch higher than her left one.

Annaleigh Ashford, for sure. In Wicked, at least, she has the audience laughing when Elphaba melts because of her expressions.
i love sierra boggess's facial expressions in the 2nd act because she cant speak so she says things with her face(hence facial expressions). in "beyond my wildest dreams", when she first comes out in the bathtub she has the like the happiest face on.. she is amazing. im going to be so sad for may when she leaves( maybe she'll extend)

"Alli Mauzey's tongue is WAYYY hyperactive when she is singing..."
I am so happy that I wasn't the only one that noticed that. It was/is REALLY distracting.
The first name to enter my head when I saw this was Betsy Joslyn. As my friends and I like to say when we watch the Sweeney Toddy dvd:
"That girl's got them crazy eyes!!!"
Hasn't anybody seen Sutton Foster perform live? Or ... talk? haha.
I think one thing that makes her so funny is that she seriously makes the funniest faces! I thought I was going to DIE laughing watching her faces in Shrek when she was farting and burping! I think in Shrek right now she is even outdoing herself in past roles.

THANK YOU! This made my day. This poster will now be my desktop image... replacing my old image of a shirtless Norm Lewis. In case you're curious, the icons for 'Microsoft Word' and MSN are located on his nipples.
LOL!
I wish Ruthie would open her mouth when she sings.
I CANNOT watch Jennifer Holliday. I can listen to her and think she's enormously talented. But I can't look at her, because of her crazy facial expressions and I think she unhinges her jaw at points so that she can open her mouth wider than what should be humanly possible. I can't do it....watching her makes irrationaly angry and makes my skin crawl a little. I wonder if that counts as a minor phobia. It would sort of be torture if someone forced me to watch hours of her on tape.
Thats funny. I watched my Sweeney DVD two days ago and I kept thinking the same thing about Betsy Joslyn. Man, she has a wonderful voice. But I thought if she sang any higher her eyeballs would pop out!!
Sutton Foster has some good expressions. She adds alot of variety into a song. Millie was a show where she added LOTS of interesting expressions.
BroadwayBound- I completely agree about Sutton. Her expressions are usually adorable and add so much. I loved the physicality she brought to Millie. It was sort of goofy and and graceful at the same time. It added a lot of humor. Just love it!

Thanks for the warning! I'm going to see her in Wicked soon.
Now, this isn't really a FACIAL expression per say, but apparently Idina and Tracie Thoms were made fun of on the set of the RENT movie because their nipples get hard and pop out when they sing. Hey, why was the rest of the cast staring at their nipples?
Why is 'nipples' the word of the day on BWW? I swear I've seen it used like forty-nine times today!
