Any peculiar expressions that certain musical theatre performers make?
For example, the interesting Elvis-esque lip curl that Patti LuPone tends to do when she's singing. Or that incredibly odd face that Michael Ball makes when he sings the phrase "and rain" in "A Little Fall of Rain" from the Les Miserables TAC. (He tends to make a lot of pretty goofy faces, actually...)
George Hearn's chin does the strangest thing when he sings. There's that strange eyebrow twitch that the OBC Moritz in "Spring Awakening" did on the Tony Awards (John Gallagher? I am not a fan of the show, so I really don't know much about it). And when Idina Menzel is singing, I'm always slightly worried that her teeth are going to jump out of her mouth and chase me.
Anyone else have any examples of this?

I laughed out loud when I read that.

Posted: 10/22/08 at 7:08pmHa, I have a friend who came home from the Les Miserables revival incredibly thrilled because, "ALEXANDER GEMIGNANI SPAT ON MY HAIR!" I was concerned that she was going to say something like, 'I'll never wash my hair again!' When Drew Sarich was playing Javert, it was like he and Alex Gemignani were having a spitting contest onstage. It was especially interesting in Confrontation when they'd stand about a millimeter away from each other and spit into each others' faces.

I'll agree with Beth Leavel, and I'll also have to nominate Charlotte d'Amboise. She made some weird faces during "Music and the Mirror."

my friend and I are convinced that Patti LuPone can't control her mouth all the time. it seems to just...do things. magic things.
I have one name for you: Betsy Joslyn.
When I see the phrase "the ____ estate", I imagine a vast mansion in the country full of monocled men and high-collared women receiving letters about productions across the country and doing spit-takes at whatever they contain.

OH YES. Betsy Joslyn. I've never seen someone with such terrifying eyes. They just... roll around in her head like ping-pong balls.
I have a friend who once said that the only thing that scares him more than clowns is the concept of making out with Patti LuPone. I mean, that's scary for more reasons than just the fact that her mouth does strange and unpredictable things, but... have you seen her on the Tony awards for Evita? By the time she was halfway through Buenos Aires, I was genuinely disturbed.

Okay, this is something really juvenile that my sister and I made about a year ago... Sorry about the horrible captions.
Presenting the Many Faces of Michael Ball, as seen in his rendition of Sunset Boulevard:
"My Edna Turnblad is prettier than Patti LuPone!" 
"I'm very sorry, ma'am, but the particularly lumpy cushion I just sat on turned out to have been your cat."

Dee Roscioli used to have some hideous facial expressions in Wicked.
Not weird facial expression but when I saw Wicked from seat BB 6 last Wed. Julie Reiber's eyes FREEKED me out. They are so light that you can almost see through them and when the light hits them the right way it looked like she didn't have any eyes.

By the way, don't know how I managed to overlook Terrence Mann-- he's right there in my avatar staring back at me. I dearly love him, but he is the creepiest-looking man I have ever seen. I wonder if he and Charlotte d'Amboise courted by standing across a room making disturbing faces at each other.

Hee hee...I was thinking of this topic yesterday because I was making screenshots from my Company DVD....I adore Raúl, but he does make some funny faces while singing!!
