West Side Story Revival....which theatre?

I hate to thread jack but I have a random question...
If one show offers the Nederlanders more for a theatre then another show...can the one show get the boot?
Like if LB said "We will give you 40k a month for the Palace but WSS says "Will give you 100K" can LB get the boot?

it seems like the basic move would be for LB to shut down or move. shutting down being the easier move (mind you I really did like LB).
just a thought and dont really see it happening but if Hairspray moved to the Nederlander. I know the Simon theatre isnt much bigger than the Nederlander.
I really think they will be taking the Palace. It will have a huge orchestra that needs plenty of space. and the palace has the wing space and the prime location.

Posted: 7/16/08 at 7:04pmThe orchestra won't fit in the Palace. The percussion is on a whole other floor for LB itself.

It would be insane to close LB whilst its making almost 800k a week, thats more than most shows on Broadway are making. And the moment the new lead takes over i think that will carry the show through the winter
I can't help think that In The Heights should move to the Nederlander (it would be a perfect a match)

#31re: West Side Story Revival....which theatre?
Posted: 7/16/08 at 7:10pmI dont think it would be, i could see the sets getting in quite well
#32re: West Side Story Revival....which theatre?
Posted: 7/16/08 at 7:16pmWhy would ITH want to move?
#33re: West Side Story Revival....which theatre?
Posted: 7/16/08 at 7:27pmIts not always about 'wanting' to move

I think LEGALLY BLONDE will close in December or during the always slow winter months.
And I think WSS will go into the Palace. But, will they wait that long for a theater when they could just snatch the Nederlander right now?
#35re: West Side Story Revival....which theatre?
Posted: 7/16/08 at 8:25pmWhy do they need a theatre now? They have quite some time to figure it out.

Well they might not need to wait until December (which btw, has a holiday rush and is not necessarily slow) if the new Elle Woods doesn't bring in numbers like LBB did, along with the fact that the OBC is dissipating. Let's come back in a month and talk about the numbers and if WSS will snatch up the Palace

Nederlander- Probably
Marquis- Occupied
Rogers- Occupied
Palace- Occupied
Neil Simon- Occupied
Fontanne- Occupied
Gershwin- Occupied
Nederlander is too small though...my guess is maybe Neil Simon will close soon..From what I've heard, Hairspray hasn't been selling out that well... So it is announced they will definitely choose a Nederlander. Maybe they will switch theaters? Or Legally Blonde could move to the Nederlander and WSS could move in Nederlander...

LBB wasn't the one to bring in numbers. It was recognition of the movie. Most of America does not know the name Laura Bell Bundy. The winner could turn out to be awful and that show seems to have a pretty big nut as they have still not recouped. A few bad weeks or a month could kill it.
LB would be a terrible fit for the Nederlander. It's sets wouldn't fit and the whole feel of the theatre is not exactly Elle Woods.

true.. but they are remodeling the Nederlander. You never know what they may do with it.
Guys, it's probably going to be playing the Nederlander unless another show at a Nederlander Theater announces its closing soon..but most of the shows are doing very well

It's not big enough. If we're going on size, I think the Palace is the perfect fit for it.
They are remodeling it but that's going to take some time and they're not starting that until after RENT closes (clearly). I don't think it would be ready for a show by February.
As I said, it's many months away, a lot could change in that time.

Posted: 7/16/08 at 8:54pmIf they are indeed renovating the Nederlander, how long would that take? If WSS were to play the Nederlander, the renovation would probably have to be done by mid January at the latest in order for the show and the cast to be able to load in, tech, and rehearse before their first preview in mid February.

Posted: 7/16/08 at 9:08pmA crazy little idea, I know, but what if 9 to 5 DIDN'T go to the Marquis, as planned? It's happened before, where, for example, Young Frankenstein announced that it would be going into the St. James, but instead went to the Hilton. What if 9 to 5 went to the Nederlander, which, in my mind, would be a perfect theater, Legally Blonde moved to the Marquis, and West Side Story moved to the Palace, or West Side Story just moved into the Marquis. Just thinking about it, a hotel would be a very elle woods type theater.

Posted: 7/16/08 at 10:35pmI really agree Jagfkb, but they wouldnt move 9 to 5 and Legally Blonde to new theaters... But the Marquis would be the perfect theater for legally blonde!!
#48re: West Side Story Revival....which theatre?
Posted: 7/17/08 at 12:14am9 to 5 announces it'll be playing at the Nederlander instead, Legally Blonde stays open at The Palace & WSS goes into the Marquis. sounds easy enough for me.
