Musical theatre? Raúl.
Wicked.
I had already been seeing shows on a consistent basis for about a year and a half (more for a ex-girlfriend at the time, than out of personal interest), but when the door slammed shut at the end of Sweeney Todd, I was hooked for good.
What got me hooked onto Broadway was actually an off-Broadway show. My fourth grade music teacher made us sing songs from musicals a lot, and I loved all of them. But the song that really stuck with me was Try to Remember from The Fantasticks. I kind of forgot about this and all other musicals for a while, until about 7th grade. That's when I suddenly remembered how much I loved that song, so I ended up downloading it and the rest of the cast recording. From then on, my obsession with theatre became full blown.
Sound of Music. I was four. =)
I grew up a gay boy in New York. I never had a chance.
Wicked three years ago. Pathetic, I know. But I hear a lot of people say say Wicked is a "gateway" musical, it lets you go on to MUCH better things.

Evita, with Patti LuPone.
Then many years later, Thoroughly Modern Millie with Sutton Foster, which also happened to come at a time in my life when I could finally afford to go see a show any time I feel like.
Someone might slap me for this, but it first started with Mamma Mia, then Wicked is what really got me into musical theatre. I know better now, though.
I grew up with cast albums in my house. I danced around singing to them all the time. FINALLY when I was 6 of 7 I got my very own! Annie as a Christmas gift from my parents! Then a little later they got me A Chorus Line ~ and promptly took it away when they heard "Dance Ten, Looks Three" and "Hello Twelve, Hello Thirteen". I did later get it back. They didn't know much about the show but I was taking dance so they thought it would be good. LOL.
Then ~ ironically enough ~ my first Broadway show (as a junior in high school) was A Chorus Line (original production...not original cast obviously) from the front row of the front mezz. That count off, the lights, and I was gone. :)
For me it was RENT.... and I'm not a bit embarrassed about that!
Well, I very recently became obsessed with Broadway and musical theater. It started when I saw the Lion King last year, and then I became more obsessed when I saw Hairspray. So yea, I'd say Hairspray and the Lion King!
I can't pin down one particular moment really. It's always been part of my life. My father was always renting various movie musicals for us to watch and I often got cast recordings on cassette for birthdays or Christmas. It was something my parents enjoyed so it became part of my life as well.
I was a Fine Arts major in college which, at my school, fell under the jurisdiction of the theatre depertment.
It was simply always there.
I watched Peter Pan with Mary Martin EVERY DAY when I was three. Then I saw the Les Mis concert on T.V and it completely blew me away, Ruthie Henshall specifically. Then it was just uphill from there!
I was obsessed with the "Broadway Kids Sing Broadway" CD when I was 6, and my mom always played cast and movie recordings around the house because I loved them. My biggest phase was a West Side Story phase in like, 5th grade.
I actually saw my first broadway shows, Hairspray and Gypsy, in March. I wept through "Good Morning Baltimore" and "Rose's Turn," but with an enormous smile on my face the entire time.
Little Women. I was twelve and had never seen a show before. I guess I loved it so much because I was razzle-dazzled by the whole Broadway experience. If I saw it now, when I'm a little more "seasoned" I would probably hate it.
TWO WORDS:
CUB BEE!
Mine started with cast recordings....I was obsessed with my Annie Record (yes record) and my dad was getting sick of listening to it non stop so he bought me the My Fair Lady cast recording and Camelot cast recording(and many more)...then he took me to see a Regional theater production of Camelot when I was 6 or 7...everyone said I was so well behaved...I was obsessed, I went to a bunch of touring shows in Philly but never mad it to see an actual broadway show on broadway till junior year in high school. I went on a trip to see Grease (Time Square was a little scarey in my "youth")...then the next show I saw was Rent my freshman year of college...I slept on the streets to get the student tickets (I didn't tell my parents that one), it was worth it seeing the OBC...since then I have seen many shows and am constantly broke due to my obsession

Aspects of Love. And then Rent reinvigorated my love of theater because I was finally able to afford to see stuff on my own. I was in college when it opened.
Well, what got me hooked on theater was seeing a college production of West Side Story when I was 8 or 9. My parents took me to see it and everything about it blew my mind (particularly the Somewhere ballet. I had no idea you could make something like that happen on stage). I'm sure if I saw that production now, I'd barf . . . but at 8 it was magical.
3 or 4 years later I discovered JC Superstar and Evita and then in my desire to learn more about musicals, I checked out the cast albums of Company and Sweeney Todd from my local library and I fell in love with Stephen Sondheim BIG TIME. I even wrote him a fan letter when Into the Woods opened on Broadway and he was kind enough to write me back. I still have the letter. :)
My love of musicals has diminished somewhat. I pretty much love a lot of stuff pre mid 80s. Not so big on the Phantoms and Rents and Wickeds and such. I am, however, a huge theater fan and after I attended performing arts high school and theater school in New York, I became interested in writing plays and more experimental/downtown stuff.

I became interested in musical theatre when I played in pits for Crazy For You and Bye Bye Birdie, but Rent's what caused me to see multiple productions per week , to join message boards, and to start collecting cast recordings.
