I tried to bring back the old thread, but for some reason it won't load.

Anyway, I have recently heard that a couple of these unpublished manuscripts have actually been circulating within the community. I did a little digging on the net and it seems that the book was possible released overseas briefly.

Has anyone here read it or know of anyone who has? I would love to hear what kept this thing from actually being released.

I'm also interested in this. Is there a copy circulating around?

R&H licenses the new book which has been produced many times beginning with the Off-Broadway revival.

Why is anyone's guess. This show in any incarnation is theatrical excrement.

I want to read this too. But its obvious they are going to glorify the off-Broadway production (which was okay) and crucify Terry Hands ("Think Grease!" as "Think Greece!"What Were They Thinking? The complete journey of Carrie the musical book. I wouldn't be surprised if Hands is the reason this wasn't released.

The original production is legendary.

The revised production is dull.

Cohen's book was actually released?!   In 2012, it was noted on dozens of websites and the following year it abruptly vanished.  Now there are two copies listed for sale on amazon.ca... for $999!  And what's up with the other BroadwayWorld thread about it which APPEARS to be there, but when you click it, it's blank?  Seriously, what the hell was in that tell-all and who's preventing us from reading it?!

99.99 % sure this was never published. Applause announced it and then removed it from its catalogue, which likely means they and the author parted ways on the project before publication. And that doesn't mean there was content involved that is scandalous. They could have just disagreed on length, proposed layout, or money.  Applause may have even just announced the title based on a pitch and not a finished  (or even started) manuscript.  Happens all the time in publishing.

I wish this would have been released. I'm sure someone has a manuscript of it.

Assuming there even is a manuscript. Like I said above, this may have been sold on a pitch and the author may never have completed or even started the actual book.

I would guess that, like the show itself, too few people wanted it enough to justify the expense.

The book was indeed finished, but just like old times, disagreements between the shows writers have prevented it from being released.

I want this book too - Rumors were around a few years ago Terry Hands, who the show's creators scapegoated for the original production, wasn't thrilled. For all the mess he did, he didn't write lyrics (or book) like "It's a simple little gig, you help me kill a pig and I've got some plans for the blood," among several other atrocities LOL.

I really find it hard to believe the reason this isn't being released is because of disagreements between the writers, or the writers and Terry Hands, etc.  There are TONS of 'behind the scenes' theatre books that are incredibly gossipy (Glen Berger's hilarious and horrifying account of Spider Man Turn off the Dark being just one that comes to mind).  You don't need to have 'permission' from those who are 'guilty ' to write a memoir and that's what this was announced as.

I still think the more likely scenario is that Applause bought this on a pitch and then the book was never actually written so the release was scrapped.

Is there any chance we're ever going to see this?

It’s been said before, but it’s worth mentioning again. Just because a publisher puts out a summary, and even a page count does not mean there was a finished manuscript or a galley proof that was sent around. Publishers routinely throw out placeholder information that gets changed once information becomes solidified. I still maintain that this likely never went beyond conception stages, and that there was probably a disagreement between the authors and publishers about something (ultimately related to money- because that’s what it’s always about) and that’s why it was not published.

If there was a proof, somebody somewhere would have read it and no evidence of that has ever turned up.
