What are some really nice hotels? — Page 2

To the OP:

Some of hotels you are getting as suggestions are probably more expensive than your boyfriend might realize. MOST of them are likely over 250 bucks a night....and some even over 300.

There are MANY lovely (and expensive) hotels...to do a basic overview: take a look at Hotwire or another hotel search engine: even if you don't end up booking it through them. That way you can both compare prices as well as SEE what you are getting.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

If money is no object, I would suggest the Sofitel on 44th between Fifth and Sixth. If they have finished renovating the outside, The Bryant Park (assuming that you ask for high floor park view rooms) is a super place to stay, and has a nice bar. Some of the park view suites even have balconies (although February doesn't lend itself to sitting outside!).

The Marriot Marquis could not be further from a nice hotel. It is a cheesy tourist compound. Ugggg... some people have zero taste. I suppose you're gonna suggest they have their nice, romantic dinner at the Time Square Olive Garden too.

Wonkit, I am actually staying at the Sofitel in a few weeks...I'm glad to hear it's nice. I have only stayed at the Philadelphia Sofitel, not the one in NY.

The Hotel Carter is just my back-up plan.

Just because a lot of tourists stay at a hotel doesn't mean it isn't nice. Uh, thats what hotels are for- TOURISTS. The Marquis has very nice rooms, gorgeous bars and restaurants with great food, a wonderful fitness center, and impeccable service. Just because it is in the middle of Times Square doesn't make it cheesy. Plus, most "tourists" consider it out of their price range with rooms often starting at 400+ a night. I think its a great hotel.

Definetly the Marriot! If you wanted to save a little bit of money to use on shows instead though the Skyline Hotel is very nice. It's not as grand as the Marriot or the Hilton but it is a very pretty hotel. It is a bit of an older hotel though.

The Skyline is in a great neighborhood just off the beaten path and has the biggest rooms I've ever seen in NYC. The Hells Kitchen location is great for local bars, eateries and shops!

Ha. Yes it is in the Hells Kitchen area and the rooms are small, but it is still a great hotel if you are there to see the city and shows and just need a place to stay for the night. It is also just a few minutes walk from Times Square.

The Marriott Marquis is a typical chain hotel. If you want a truly nice hotel in the theatre district, the two obvious choices are the Renaissance or the Michelangelo. Two further choices would be the Crowne Plaza or the W. The MM is not even close to these.

Elphaba, I'm staying at the Marriott Marquis that same weekend, seeing Billy Elliott. It's a really nice hotel. I'll be sending positive "engagement" vibes out to you.

I park at the Skyline sometimes- best deal in the city- $10

I stayed at the Milford Plaza- hated it.
I was in the penthouse at the marriott- it was cool.
& I love the bar overlooking Times Square.

Several of my friends stay at The Holtel Edison on 47th & they love it.

Oooh, a Proposal

Everyone has a different defination of a "really nice hotel." What is your price range? How much do you want to spend per night? And, what part of town are you looking to stay in - theatre district, midtown, Upper Westside, Upper Eastside, etc.

For many, many years my home away from home while vacationing in NYC was The Plaza. When it closed a few years back for it's 2 year remodel, I moved to The Waldorf, and that's where I stay whenever I'm in NYC.

When making a reservation, always, always, always call the hotel directly rather than the 1-800 number. When calling the hotel, make sure and ask for IN HOUSE room reservations. If they don't have in house reservations, ask to be transferred to the front desk.

Many people have had many different experiences on Priceline, Expedia, etc. The few times that I've tried it, I've called the hotel directly, and got a cheaper rate than what the other discount travel sites were offering. And, if you belong to Starwood Points, Hilton HHonors, or any other frequent guest hotel programs, you won't be able to get points/credits for your stay when you book with an outside company.

Danmag: I'll be sure to tell Lorenzo and Renetta to give you an extra bump next time you come to town, unless you prefer to go to Tock tho I know you two have your "history" after he caught u with his brother Tick while u 2 were still an item. Either way, next time I'm in the hood I'll tell Shaneefa and Lorella that you said "whats really good, hobags?"

Oooh, a Proposal

I think the Milford Plaza is currently closed for 12-18 months for renovations. It was really dated last time I stayed there but the service was exceptional.

And yes "really nice" is relative. For a bumkin like me, the Marriott Marquis is a really nice hotel.

I must be a real bumkin since I found the Hampton Inn "really nice".
