What do you think happens to the characters in Fiddler on the Roof after the show is over?

There's no think about it. The source material goes on long after Fiddler ends.

I'm sure someone will come in with some smart-%ss answer, but face it: you dont know. There's a reason why you dont know -- hope and faith. If you had the post story, where Tevye and everyone else arrives in America and makes a fortune, what would be the point of the show?

Instead, you have to have faith that these characters will make it, somehow, even though you dont know how. That's the whole basis of the show: faith and hope that you'll make it through the unknown future.

I'm trying to find a summary. My memory is foggy.

I know Sphritze gets killed at some point, as does Motel, and Golde dies before Tevye. And Tevye and Chava do eventually reunite.

Sweet! Why couldn't we have done the post-Fiddler version when I was in the show? I wouldn't have minded my Motel getting shot...

That was terrible. I'm done.

The smart a$$ answer is that they came to NYC and wrote a musical.

And that's not far from the truth.

I live near "Aleichem Street" (86th) where the author of the original stories used to live...

EDIT: Spelling...

They did write a musical. It's called RAGS.

THAT'S the smartass answer.

Yeah, I knew that the Shalom Aleichem stories went on, I just wanted to give people an outlet to be creative and come up with interesting outcomes.

I'll try one!

Let's see...only Tevye and one of his young daughters survive the trip to America. They arrive and live in a filthy tenement in the Lower East Side. Then, one day while on a train, a conductor sees the flip book of an ice skater that he made for his daughter...

Wait. That's terrible. I quit.

If anyone saw the 2004 Easter Bonnet, they would know that the family came to New York and moved to "Avenue Jew"

And Lazar and Rod hooked up re: What becomes of Tevye and family after they leave Anatevka?

ACTUAL answer: Shprintze fell in love with a rich boy in New York. His parents would not accept her, so she committed suicide.

Know what? They died, all of them. Most of them died in poverty or worse, which makes the thematic core of the entire musical FIDDLER completely irrelevant. Why suffer the pogrom and work to stay together as a family if you're just gonna die anyway? "Tradition" means nothing. "Matchmaker" is just a silly girlie song, since everyone involved is going to have either a failed marriage or a miserable relationship or no chance at happiness whatsoever. Tevye will see everything he worked so hard to build fall to pieces.

There. Everyone happy? Good.

Here is the best I could find:

Unlike the family in Fiddler, in the Tevye stories our hero has been blessed with seven, not five, daughters. Of course, seven daughters compounds Tevye's problems greatly because he has to wonder how an honest, hard-working dairyman provides dowrys for seven women. Fiddler follows the stories of Tzeitel, Hodel, and Chava as young women, however we may be glad the story stops at the point it does. Although the ending of Fiddler is somber, it pales in comparison to Aleichem's Tevye stories. In these stories, Tevye's two youngest daughters, Schprintze and Bielke, grow up to give him even more to worry over. Sadly, in the Tevye stories Schprintze commits suicide when she is abandoned by a rich young man whose family disapproves of her because of her family background. Bielke, too, struggles with the issue of how she and her family are perceived. Her resolution, although not as self-destructive as Schprintz's, is no less heartbreaking. Bielke agrees to an arranged marriage with a rich man, however the man thinks Tevye is beneath him and urges him to leave the country. Bielke is torn between the two men in her life but sides with her husband, turning her back on her father.

I will see if I can find anything else...

Hah...I was a Motel as well!

Also....this thread reminded me of a very funny Mad Magazine parody called "Antennae on the Roof" that dealt with exactly this concept. Tevye and his family have moved to new york and his daughters become sluts. I remember the lyrics to a parody of "Miracle of Miracles":

Dumb-dumb of dumb-dumbs,
Imbecile of imbeciles.
God sent us to the U.S.A.

Said "You'll be free"
and, imbecile of imbeciles,
look at what we have...today!
