What can I take high school students to see in London?

Posted: 1/24/07 at 3:44pmIn April, I'm taking a tour of 45 students from a Catholic high school to London. We get to see three shows, and I'm trying to pick, one musical, one drama, and one comedy. If you had had to pick only one show for each category, which three shows would you see?

Posted: 1/24/07 at 4:11pmI second Mary Poppins. For Drama, what about Equis? If tickets are available that is. This is the production with Daniel Radcliffe and Richard Griffiths, so it may be hard to get tickets for that. The Glass Menagerie starts at the Apollo on Jan. 31. As for Comedy, History Boys is back in the West End at the Wyndham.

You MUST see The Woman in Black. It's an unforgettable night at the theatre.

I've been wanting to see this for ages. Ever since you raved about it, actually. I really wish I could get to London...

I second The Woman in Black. This never fails to blow away schoolkids.
For the love of god, don't take them to Wicked.
Does Catholic school rule out anything gay? If not, History Boys would be a good pick for your comedy. Otherwise, maybe Avenue Q? If that's not too dirty...

As much as I love Phantom, take them to Mary Poppins. It's become cliche to take kids to Phantom.
I also recommend The Mousetrap. It's been running for a LONG time. Comedy...don't know about what's playing right now.

Oh give the Mousetrap a miss!
Little Shop of Horrors will have transfered by then and been selling out at the Menier.
I find most younger kids I know in theatre all loved seeing We Will Rock You. If you must see a big belty musical you may as well see that one as its all spectacle and big voices.
Love Song and Glass Menagerie will be open play wise.
Oh and Billy Elliot is def worth a look and some of my friends seem to rate The Sound of Music for pure cheese.

Billy. Elliot.
Seriously, you have to take them to see it.

Make it three recommendations for 'Woman in Black.' When I saw it, there was a huge group of high school age kids there. It was fun to hear them react during the show and to hear their excited chatter afterward.

Posted: 1/25/07 at 2:21amI've heard good things about Woman in Black...History Boys is always a favorite...Wicked or Mary or Billy would all be appropriate. I would DEF. not say Eqqus...I highly doubt that it would be approved, and you need a really mature bunch of kids to see that one.

let me be the first to say that I did not like the woman and black. I thought it was quite hokey, and there was not one point during the whole show when I got scared.
Though, I would definitely catch Billy Elliot and Little Shop

"For Drama, what about Equis?"
That would cause some drama. They are a group of Catholic students. Taking them to see a show where a young man masturbates while naked on a horse might upset some parents.

Billy Elliott for sure, or the very under rated Cabaret. Ave Q is also a good choice for Comedy. Shame Frost/Nixon will be closed - it received very good reports, The Mousetrap not such a good idea really. Glass Menagerie, as already mentioned will be open and should be good.
Sound of Music would be good (I like cheese LOL) I saw it last week and enjoyed it very much - but it is very hard to get tickets especially for a group. Seeing Mary Poppins tonight so will pass judgement on that later!

take them to see Caroline, Or Change
change their lives.

Take 'em to see a show that's still open. 'Caroline, Or Change' was incredible, but did finish at the beginning of the month.

Musical: Little Shop of Horrors or Wicked
Play: The 39 Steps or Woman in Black
All fairly 'safe' choices...
