I was on playbill.com the other day lookingg at the list of long running shows and noticed that the only two on the top ten list that are still playing and don't look to be closing anytime soon are Phantom and Rent. Do you guys think that Rent has a chance to be longest running show on broadway?
And if not, then what show do you guys think will beat phantom.
It doesn't matter what WE think. What matters is what YOU think.
At the rate it's going, with dozens and dozens of fangirls attending each and every performance -- And for those who have yet to experience the masterwork of Jonathan Larson's grand vision... It'll run for a LEEEEETlE while longer, I have a feeling. Longest Running? Maybe.
RENT has much life in it still...but I don't think that it can possibly pass PHANTOM. PHANTOM is the longest and it is still selling out most weekends. It's not even showing signs of slowing, let alone closing.
I wouldn't doubt if PHANTOM held this title for the next 25+ years.
VOICES FOR RENT WILL KEEP RENT ALIVE!!!1
I always thought it was gonna be Beauty and the Beast... unfortunately that didn't work out.
I really hope this doesn't happen, but I wouldn't be surprised if Wicked eventually took the title..
For something to beat Phantom, Phantom would first have to close and with recent grosses being over 95% I don't see that happening anytime soon.

RENT seems to get more and more dated with each passing year, where PHANTOM has a bit more of a "timeless" quality. I don't see RENT overtaking it.
Now before anyone jumps all over me, just know that I'm not a particular fan or detractor of either of these show, so I don't care one way or the other.
It's amazing that PHANTOM is still performing so strongly. Just goes to show that the majority of tourist only want to see something with a name they recognize. Kind of sad, really...

I bet Phantom would still be running even after ALW is in his grave.
I could see Lion King or Wicked running long enough to have a shot at it.

I would laugh if Avenue Q becomes the longest running show

Just think...in 15 years we'll see actresses like Dakota Fanning playing Elphaba!

With RENTs low running costs, it can definitely keep on going even with its low box office. Lion King has long lasting appeal, but I don't think it will pass POTO. Wicked, on the other hand, regardless of what people here think of this show, has become an international sensation. Like, Mamma Mia, this critic proof show is printing $ all over the world. I think it might have a chance of passing POTO (if it closes), but definitely reaching the top 5. Mamma Mia will probably break the top 5-10 when its all done.
POTO does have a timeless quality about it because of its period classical overtones and spectacle. foreign tourists can come and still understand what's going on & hear some pretty tunes. It's structure/stagecraft do give it more staying power than ALW's more original works. i don't think its going anywhere anytime soon.
As long as they keep stunt casting Chicago has a chance.

I hope it's CHICAGO or AVENUE Q.
But I'm afraid it'll be THE LION KING or MAMMA MIA!
Most likely "Wicked" will top them all---
I highly doubt it will be THE LION KING. I see that show closing in the next 5-10 years.
As was said before, for something else to take the title, PHANTOM must first close. It's not just a matter of WICKED still being around in 15+ years, it's a matter of PHANTOM ever closing.
Knowing Webber, Cameron Mackintosh, and the public, PHANTOM will run FOREVER.
I think that Lion King would be the winner but there is something about WICKED> it is the show to end all shows in many ways.
If RAGTIME was still playing I would have said that show.

I totally see ALW keeping phantom open for a very long time..... Also since there is all this talk about doing the sequel.... I foresee the sequel opening somewhere here on broadway in the next year or two and being open at the same time as the current phantom show. This being that he could lock it up that when familys see one show on their vacation that the second show they see is the new one. Marketing, marketing, marketing. I foresee the sequel show doing well even if it does end up being a terrible piece of drible due to the original being still open.
The only thing I can see overtaking Phantom at this point would be Wicked and even that still has a long ways to go before proving it has the longevity POTO has. I wonder if people will ever get sick of it.

When a tourist comes to the city they want to see Phantom. So I don't see it closing any time soon. But if any of the shows currently running did pass it I wouldn't be surprised if it was Wicked.
MAMMA MIA, hands down. RENT will close and MAMMA MIA will still be running. MAMMA MIA is the next PHANTOM, in terms of tourist appeal -- which, when you think about it artistically, is pretty damn sad.
Just think...in 15 years we'll see actresses like Dakota Fanning playing Elphaba!

Yes, only on BroadwayWorld.
Rent has a very good chance i would say. There is not a chance Rent will close in the next few years but webber has been known to pull the plug on his shows when they are still doing very well(Cats,Starlight).
I agree with what the poster above me said. I was just wondering with webber being known to close shows even if they are still doing well a la cats and starlight. What do you think the chances of this happining with POTO? I mean a friend of mine and I agreed that a show like Cats could easilly have played a good few years more if they hadn't decided to close it when they did.
