Posted: 10/4/14 at 3:22pmSo I've been having some trouble listening to cast albums because musical theatre music requires that you listen pretty carefully, but I get really bored if all I do is sit there and listen. So what do you all like to do when you listen to cast albums?

Listen to the music to bring back memories of the show and how much I used to love Broadway.
God knows how many I never listen to as I have so many. I have a mega collection.

Listening to a show while jogging the 3 miles around the Silverlake reservoir is perfect. Every so often the show lifts me so far away from where I am that I find I've traversed an inclined patch without even noticing.

Posted: 10/4/14 at 4:22pmCleaning is always the best for me if it's a score I've never heard before. Getting ready in the morning is also a great time but it usually isn't enough for a full album.

Posted: 10/4/14 at 5:37pmHomework, driving, working out, online browsing... I don't listen so much for the intricacies, but just to hear the melodies and voices from my favorite shows. If I want to really get back into the show, I'll watch youtube performances.

Posted: 10/4/14 at 6:35pmI have like 500+ cast recordings (broadway, london, off-broadway, revivals, & studios) and I love typing in a person's name in the search bar on itunes and seeing how many albums I have them in. I'm kind of obsessed at this point. I love organizing them as well. Most people just have "wicked" as the album and album artists (for example) but I put the singers for every single song individually. Like "___ ___, & ensemble". or "company".

Listening to cast albums can be tough, because the vast majority are very long (an hour, at least) and devoting that much unproductive time to focusing on listening to a cast album is very difficult.
When I get to do it? On long transit rides. I live in Toronto and take public transit everywhere, and it can sometimes take as much as an hour and a half, which is more than enough time to take in the average cast album. It's great, because what else am I gonna do on a transit ride?

I live in the city and don't own a car so whenever I rent one for a long trip..I always bring my cast album CD's. They make the trip go much faster - and for a two hour trip, I get to hear 2-3 of them...and if I am in car by myself, can play them nice and loud (and sing along on occasion I confess).
Or I use headphones and listen to them while I am doing work at my computer...works really well during tedious jobs.

I drink. I don't see how anyone can call that Unproductive!
(Used to smoke and drink, but one has to make some concession to getting older.)

I love listening to cast albums on airplanes. I travel a lot and starting the first track before take off really sets me off on an incredible visual journal.
But on a regular basis I love to listen to them while driving. Similar feeling to the flight, too.

Posted: 10/4/14 at 10:56pmI commute a good three hours every day, so it really is the perfect opportunity to listen to a full cast recording or two from beginning to end!

Might we have to do an intervention?
You've read my posts, Someone. Isn't it obvious?

Just to be clear, I don't drink because I need alcohol to survive a cast album. We've just made a custom of sitting outside (we live in the desert) after dark, sipping cocktails and listening to OC albums.

I'm with MusicAndPassion about flights. For years I've used OBCs during trips. For short flights I do playlists that last the length of the flight. For long ones I string whole shows together. So JFK to LAX could be Sweeney Todd, followed by Mack and Mabel, then The Most Happy Fella, Funny Girl, The Grass Harp and land with A Little Night Music, hopefully as A Weekend in the Country is finishing up.
I hate to fly, and a series of cast recordings not only helps me get lost in the process of being on a plane, but finishing each recording ticks of a leg of the flight, which is really satisfying.
