I'd be suprised if this were the case. After all this is not the only thing that happens in the show...

Absolutely NOT true. The show goes on and that's all there is to it. Live theater is just that... LIVE... and sometimes things happen. There is no way that would warrant a refund. If she doesn't fly it's most likely that there was a technical glitch and/or a safety issue which wont allow for "flying".

If they can't get a freaking cherry picker to work, they have some big problems.

The best thing about live theatre is that it's live and anything can happen.

Well, maybe the actress didn't strap herself in properly - if she's an u/s or standby, maybe she didn't have enough practice time with it. How would that work though. Would the ensemble just step over all the black fabric to sing.

PS
Is Fieryo in the end part? I know he's in the begining, does he come out as part of the "ensemble" to sing at the end of Act 1?

I believe that Elpahaba just moves downstage to finish the song if the flying doesn't happen.

What if elphaba doesnt fly?

She doesn't defy gravity. The scene changes qucikly and Fiyero is drunk off Winky beer, and is engaging in a poker match with Glinda, Boq, and Dr. Dillamond. Harvey Fierstein's there too, he's standby for drunken Ozian #3.

there was a recent thread on Julia Murney's understudy not flying...Victoria something was her name...I think she just walks towards the center of the stage and then sings or something like that.

Sometimes the Defy Gravity machine breaks...when this happens Elphaba steps foward and the esemble kinda goes to their knees. Live theatre, things happen. They try to have this not happen as much as they can help it.

If she doesn't defy gravity it is the end of times as we know it.
Terrible plagues invade NYC and the moon turns red.
Certain teenagers turn into Wicked-hater-eating-zombies, who can only mumble the words "she-didn't-flyyyy"

And to be honest, I don't think they would refund anything if the performance keeps going. If it was cancelled, it would be another story.

BobbyBubby it's not THAT easy.

Jenna Leigh Green's first performance as Elphie the Cherrypicker didn't work. She simply walked forward, as like everyone else stated, and finished the song.

If that's the only reason teenyboppers are going to see Wicked then they can go to an amusement park and see the same thrill.

What about the whole broom thing? And wouldn't that mess up all the lights?

They must have an emergency "she can't fly" light cue.
The broom thing? That could stay the same.

There's a computer attatched to the cherry picker - I would assume that it would tell the lighting department that it's not going to 'defy gravity' and they would start emergency procedures.

Yes it's better for the audience if she does 'fly' but at the end of the day **** happens. From what I've heard the Elphaba normally gives an amazing rendition of the song as she is not stuck on a board the size of a tea tray 15 ft in the air. So...that would probably even it out slightly, well to those going to see the show not the spectical.

Geez....with all the modern technology we have in Broadway shows nowadays (cardboard lemons, bucking bulls, litebrite, Lestat)
you think they would be able to give Elphaba something bigger than a tea tray to stand on...I remember thinking it was cool but it's a freakin cherry picker...

I don't remember a cherry picker being an amusement park ride...

AND btw, I remember their being some sort of cherry picker thing at the end of Lestat Act One, which seemed to flow so much smoother than the flying 2 million dollar tea tray.
