For women its easy -- Mama Rose, most people would say, or perhaps Evita. But what would you consider the male equivilent? What is the greatest role for a man in Musical Theater?
Sweeney Todd.
Tevye

But I will have to agree with you...my list would be:
Tevye
Sweeney Todd
Billy Bigelow
Guido Contini
phantom! well probably not but he's all i have in mind
Mama Rose? i would agree with Evita,Norma Desmond, the Narrator in Joseph, the Witch,Spider Woman in "kiss...",Sally Bowles...bla bla. the best male role is Roger in Rent.

Billy Bigelow - The Sililoquy has to be one of the best male songs ever written

well all the above obviously, but i've been listening more and more and i really think guido contini is one of the best male roles ever written.
I'll add Harold Hill for sheer difficulty of learning the part!
Sweeney Todd I guess because he has quiet a few different levels (you have to be cheering for him to kill the judge but be afriad of him)
