I had a dream last night that Hot Feet was moving to an Off-Broadway house. Is that not weird? I'm having Broadway dreams. And then I got up this morning and was like searching the boards to see if it was true. haha.
Anyways...carry on...

Posted: 4/26/06 at 2:05pmI think the only thing about the show that will garner any type of good reviews is the choreography and their corp of dancers.

Posted: 4/26/06 at 2:06pmA friend of mine saw it in D.C. and said it was not that good. The dancing was good but the book was bad. She said unless they work on the book, it may not make it on Broadway. EWF is my favorite group and I hope this show is a success. I do plan to see it in June. But I must say, I just have a bad feeling about how it is going to do.

Although it's been in previews for about a week now, it seems as if no one is talking about it.
I saw it in DC as well, and from what I hear, the shows a bit tighter now.

Posted: 4/26/06 at 2:12pmI think the reviews will single out the dancing and the dancers, but the overall tone of the reviews will be very dismissive.

Posted: 4/26/06 at 2:12pmThe critics are on a roll w/ Three Days of Rain and Lestat....i'm sure Hot Feet will be swept up in the slaughter.

Posted: 4/26/06 at 2:16pmYeah, there really is no buzz around the show. You would think there would be considering its sorta a brand-new musical that sorta came out of nowhere.

I saw this show the other night and it SO DOES NOT MATTER WHAT THE REVIEWS ARE.
This show will never survive, because the approach to it is all wrong. They should have never introduced the ridiculous devil/red shoe idea into the mix if this was going to be a dance show. How 80's!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Who could ever care about something so mundane? At least Mama Mia doesn't pretend to be "deep" and this show takes itself WAY too seriosuly
It seems odd that the MOST OBVIOUS idea, and probably best way to present the music of E, W, & F would have been to do it ala Jersey Boys, which would have been much more interesting than the 80's devil and gigantic red dance shoes (the set designer must have choked when they asked him to do that).
The bottom line--great dancing (which it is) will never make a show which is really supposed to be about the music of E, W, & F, which seems an almost afterthought, They mine as well be dancing to my armpit farts.

I actually think they will be worse than Lestat. I saw it last night and I was actually quite upset by the whole evening. Very talented dancers doing extremely repetitive and unremarkable choreography. Only two or three songs sung onstage that were the weakest of the lot. Some really hammy, flat acting.
A devil that seems to speak five different accents in one sentence. In all, it just seems really underdirected - if that's a phrase - perhaps to that audiences can wow at the dancing, but when the "signature dance" is basically one movement repeated for five minutes, where's the wow? Which is a shame, because some actors I'm a big fan of - Keith David, Ann Dusquenay and Michael Balderrama - just feel lost, like they are trying to find their characters on their own...I dunno.
Maybe I just didn't get it. But at least with Lestat, it feels like they at least tried. The whole night, I felt like I was watching the show within a show of Staying Alive, Satan's Alley.

I would hope critic's give this show what it deserves....negative reviews.
I saw the show last night. I was embarassed for Broadway. Broadway has hit a new low. I thought 'In My Life' was a joke; this show makes 'In My Life' look like high art.
Don't get me wrong, the dancers are phenomenal. That being said, I personally did not enjoy the choreography at all. The costumes are heinous. The set is serviceable at best. The green lazer light show grew terribly old.
I have a problem with the acting levels of the cast. At times, a lot of it looked like a bad after school special from 1987. The actor portraying Mr. Serpentine appeared to go up on lines repeatedly through out last night's performance. The book to this show is probably the worst on Broadway right now. The scenes barely try to hold the dance numbers together.
I wonder who sat behind a table and said, 'we made it, this show is ready for Broadway.' It's this kind of reckless show trying to capitalize on yet another band's popular tunes that is RUINING Broadway. New audiences will come to see the dreck that is onstage at the Hilton and think this is what all Broadway shows are like and never want to step foot in another theatre.
I was comped into the show last night, and I was still angry I wasted those two and a half hours. Good dancers can only entertain for a certain period of time when the rest of the material around them is crumbling.
I have friends in the show, many who are making their Broadway debut, so I really tried to have a good time and enjoy myself. But, as the evening progressed I found myself growing more irritated by the show. By the end, I was sad for the two and a half hours of my life I would never see again.
All in all, this show stoops below theme park level. A true new low for Broadway.
And, what really irritates me is the standing ovation this show received. People will stand up and clap for anything anymore.

Posted: 4/27/06 at 7:59amInteresting. In DC, at least at the performance I went to, no one stood that I could see.
#20re: What kind of reviews you think Hot Feet will open too?
Posted: 4/27/06 at 10:25amits probably an ovation for the dancers' hard efforts with very bad material.

Only a handful stood when I saw it in DC.
nycdncr, I'm just curious as to whether your friends are aware of the weaknesses in this show.
Standing ovations can be very misleading and making people think they have a hit on their hands.
Mr. Serpentine went up on his lines a lot in DC, too.

In my opinion, In My Life was much more of an embarrassment than Hot Feet. Yes, they were both awful, but at least Hot Feet had good dancing and good music. There was nothing positive about In My Life...except the fact that you could laugh *at* the show.
That being said, Hot Feet will probably last about as long as Ring of Fire (57 perf), Lennon (49 perf), and In My Life (61 perf). The cast is talented and will get work in other shows in the future.

Please don't lose your will to live!! There are resturaunts to be cleaned, parts to audition for and not get, and songs to be sung poorly.
Please forgive me, but when I read comment like those of EffieWhite, even if I agree with some of the sentiment, it really reminds me of a whole lot of "Theater" students that never create but sit back and throw darts.
I bet when he sings happy birthday at Fridays he wants everyone in the resturaunt to quiet down and listen to his big number!
