What musical should be made into a movie next? — Page 3

He did say recently in an interview that they just got the rights for it so I presume the next step is writer, director, etc. Damn, movies take long to do!

I've always wanted to see a movie version of "On The Twentieth Century." Although people disagree with me I think that Twentieth Century would work as a cartoon. I can just see a glamorous type couple singing "Our Private World" to each other. But people tell me "Twentieth Century's themes are too grownup for animation. But can't you see "Mrs. Primrose is a nut" being done in animation?

One might consider doing "Camelot" in animation also.

But what do I know?

ok, first off, WICKED was never "suppose" to be a movie made by universal, they were only interested in it for the stage, and i seriously doubt that with it's success right now, that they'd make it into a film. And who ever said Cameron Diaz should be Glinda should just leave this site now and never come back.

I would love to see Saigon or Les Mis, but unless done right, i dont think they would be successful. ALL singing musicals like Evita and Phantom didnt do to well. (But Phantom is a whole other subjest, what a horrible film). A Cabaret remake would be interesting, and i heard that Rob Marshall was thinking about it. I also heard that Jersey Boys is in the works too.

I think that Aida would make a great film, but it depends on the director. Maybe Rob Marshall and Bill Condon should just be in charge of movie musicals from now on.

at one point they were gonna do Into The Woods with the Jim Henson Company. Don't know whatever came of that.

I agree with this statement, like the scene in the show where the group first lands on the scene with Sherry, could be shot where you hear instrumental versions of Sherry and like there are shots at different homes turning on American Bandstand and then you see and hear Barry Belson talk about it and then after he finished, you see the guys on each television screen singing Sherry and the people watching going nuts and dancing along or as a line in the show says "The Whole World Exploded". The only thing though is that if Jersey Boys becomes a movie, they should shoot a good amount of it in Newark and Belleville, NJ.

SpamAlot as a movie would be really good, seeing that unlike the original movie, it would have a plot and an ending. Tim, Hank, David, Sara, and as much of the original cast should be in it and they should also get Robin Williams for it as well.

I think All Shook Up could work out great as a made for tv movie or a straight to dvd movie.

One other thing, I would really like to see a remake of Little Shop of Horrors get made that's more faithful to the stage show. It doesn't have to be a theatrical thing, it can be a made for tv movie or a straight to dvd movie.

I beleive that if Kristen and Idina did do the movie right now, it would not do too well.

spacedog, With respect to your original post, I feel that any broadway hit could possibly be made into a successful movie IF the creative effort is brilliant enough. But that rarely happens.

I'm not sure that Dreamgirls can be called a success- at least financially. I have no idea what would constitute a financial hit for Dreamgirls but I would bet that 54M in four weeks and 850 theatres doesn't come close.

Making money on a movie musical is so problematic that I can't imagine any Broadway producer with a big cash cow like Wicked or Jersey Boys even considering a movie version until the play has run it's course and profits are winding down.

I'm all about a Ragtime. I think it has the most potential for star power and artistic merit. You have all these small roles in the show that you could get A List stars to come in and do that wouldn't take long for shoots.

Get Taye Diggs in to do Coalhouse or maybe even Will Smith and maybe Audra could even merit an audition to reprise her role, perhaps. If not anyone from Fantasia to Beyonce to Anika would be foaming at the mouth to try their hand at Sarah. Funnily, now that I think about it, Beyonce has that childlike thing going for her that Audra had in this role. A name for mother obviously, some one like Nicole Kidman. Get Josh Groban to do Younger Brother...and the cute boy from Love Actually, Thomas Sangster, as the little boy! Robin Williams as Tateh!

In smaller roles you could get Bette Midler or Kathy Bates as Emma Goldman...and you could get one of these more credible pop princess's to do "The Girl on the Swing!" And then Jennifer Holiday as Sarah's friend so she can sing the solo in "Till We Reach That Day."

i've got excited about the prospects of some of these - i can relly see assassins being interesting, and into the woods in a kind of pan's labyrinth, fantasist way.
follies would be outstanding, and as people have said, a real contender for incredible people to be involved without it being stunt casting.

completely agree with spelling bee - not sure if it would be a huge hit, but i'd want to see it.

anyone think batboy would be brilliant - so spoofy and quirky, it could work. not as alienating as urinetown or anything like that.

seussical could make a cute kids type film, done in a similar way to the grinch and cat in the hat, v cartoony.

I think if "Batboy" is ever done, it should be done like "Reefer Madness." I just think it would translate better that way.
