Light In The Piazza would be good, but a little hard to shoot in Florence.
If Wicked is done, call up Kat McPhee (the next J Hud) and Resse W. or Cameron Diaz for the leads.
Miss Saigon would be Ok, if not like Saving Private Ryan.

If so, the beans are now crack.
Crack is whack.

Didn't Michael Bennett have a long concept for Chorus Line whichw as very "meta"? Like about people auditioning to be in a film version of Chorus Line? Didn't sound perfect but certainly more interesting than what was done...
Follies originally ahd a similar treatment done up in the 70s--instead of a theatre reuninon it was a Movie star reuninon. I think many stage musicals work best when "rethunk" for movies (which is why ideally I hope that stage productions get a good video filming of the stage version as well as a film adaptation). Of course not every musical needs to be rethought...
Some of my fave musicals though--like if Companyw as ever done I think it would almost work as well as a really well done (preferably cable) TV movie, or a small scale film than as a typical movie musical--that's just the format that seems to work best for me when I picture it.
(and I don't wanna be snipy, and I actually probably prefer Miss Saigon as entertainment to Saving Private Ryan but Is ee no real similarity :P )

i agree with the jersey boy thing.
it would be wonderful, if done right.
definitely very intense on screen, as is the show on stage.. but i would be interested to see how something like that turned out.
and we all know that it's only a matter of time until Wicked the MOVIE comes into play, if it hasn't already. the thing's a gold mine, it would be stupid of them not to consider a movie-version.
but i know it's really lame to say but sometimes it sucks because then shows become all commercialized and it kind of kills the appeal. i'm not saying it's only "cool" to like shows and things no one's ever heard of, but then you get people [like with rent] saying "oh i LOVE rent, i'm their biggest fan i love adam and rosario blah blah.." and then you find out they've only seen the movie trailer and stuff is just obscene. it kind of puts a damper on the beauty of the theatre.
alright i'm done ranting now. =)

MS wouldn't be like SPR... it's a different war, and MS is set during the Vietnam War, but it's not about the front lines by any means.
The problem I think would be that, say, the giant helicopter would probably not be as visually stunning in a movie. Unless of course they stage the entire scene like it really was, with that huge crowd. That would be pretty cool.
Anyway, I'd like Ragtime, Parade, The Secret Garden, or Into the Woods. Kiss of the Spiderwoman would be interesting, but I think it's so theatrical that I'm not sure if it would work.

Posted: 1/16/07 at 6:05pminto the woods would be amazing. in the 90s, Rob Reiner tried to put it in production. cast included cher as witch, robin williams and baker, goldie hawn as bakers wife, danny devito as the giant and rosanne as jack's mother

Follies -- yes, most definately
I'd also like to see Bill Condon re-make 'A Chorus Line' and do Bennett some justice.
Hell, the 2 most successful film musicals of late are Chicago & Dreamgirls..... film musicals should ONLY be done by Bill Condon

Posted: 1/16/07 at 6:21pmI'd like to go back to Cabaret. The Fosse film is genius, yes. But, the story is vastly different from the stage version. I would love to see a new film of the Mendes/Marshall staging. "Who Cares", "I don't care much", "What would you do", I'm dying to see these done. Also, I'd like to see a remake of "Tommy", also using the stage version, where Capt. Walker kills the boyfriend, not the other way around. And, I'd like to see what an innovative director could do with "Sunday in the Park with George".

Well at first I'm thinking of a Les Miserables movie/musical.
But I'm not sure exactly how that would pan out.

Rumour is Condon is interested in Follies--but I'm not really sold to the idea that he's the only one who should do them, yet...
I've read the 90s script of Into the Woods that was I believe even briefly greenlighted (though I never heard of Cher playign the witch--a few readings with Robin Williams etc were done)
Lowell Ganz & Babaloo Mandel wrote the screentreatment (their famous for comedies like Splash but did do the sligthly more serious comedy Parenthood which dealt with some of the same issues as ITW in a way...) which was much broader and more comic than Lapine's and basically was based around Act I with elements of Act II intertwined (from what I remember). There was at least one place marked for a new song (I don't believe Sondheim ever wrote any though), and Jim henson's creature shop was involved in ideas for the effects. Then it got lost in the studio shuffle when some people changed--it sounded interesting but like quite a different beast than the play (which, as I've said, if done well I don't really have a big problem with).
Kiss of the Spiderwoman being made into a movie was kinda knocked around shortly after Chicago was a hit when some other musicals (like Pippin) were also mentioned. i think it could work--since Aurora' is a movie actress...
I believe a new version of Cabaret starring Renee Zelwegger of the stage version--I wouldn'tbe too opposed but as much as I also love the stage version I don't see much need...

I LOVE the thought of Miss Saigon, if they stayed away from Saving Private Ryan aspect, as everyone has said. Les Miz COULD work, if it was done correctly. (Not that I know what "Correctly" would be, but i'm sure i could see what "incorrectly" would be!) Oh! And I think Mary Poppins would work wonderfully!
Now, as for a musical that WON'T work as a movie? Wicked! What is the next musical TO be made into a movie? Most likely Wicked.

WICKED is a natural, as much as I hate to say it (not a real fan of the thing, sorry). What might be interesting (and cost effective) would be to do the entire thing as a green screen movie, like SKY CAPTAIN. That would allow the art directors almost complete freedom to imagine Oz in a far more arch way than could possibly be built.
I imagine it's already in development. Frankly, I'd be surprised if it werent.

Posted: 1/16/07 at 7:01pmI have to tell you, if I were to do a movie version of Miss Saigon, I would 86 the recitatives, replace them with dialogue (as seems to be the current trend), and more importantly, delve into Chris's grief when he thinks he's lost Kim forever. Maybe have a scene where he meets Ellen for the first time.

If Bernadette Peters played Sally in Follies I would most likely kill myself...
I'm just sayin.
Wicked will probably be done, Into the Woods could work very well, Follies could be amazing or it could be awful. (I would rather see Marshall do Follies and Condon do Into the Woods)
And I think The Light In The Piazza would translate wonderfully to film as well.

Posted: 1/16/07 at 7:09pmDoes anyone else think that if the "Piazza" film was done sometime within our lifetimes, Meryl Streep might just make a fabulous Margaret. I mean, I love Victoria Clark and would love to have her do it, but if they want a star name, she'd be my first choice.
#45re: What musical should be made into a movie next?
Posted: 1/16/07 at 7:19pmI would love to LES MIS. But I just don't want it to be made poorly (RENT, POTO, THE PRODUCERS) and have it be only film made of it. So, I don't know. The director and casting would be key.

Posted: 1/16/07 at 7:57pmWhat I would really love to see is an HBO or a Showtime make a few musicals that might not do well on the big screen, but people would definitely watch at home. Or any network for that matter. Pretty much every time a musical is made for TV (Annie, The Music Man), it does pretty well in the ratings. The great Gypsy remake with Bette Midler is another example. Then we could get a remade "Mame" like they've been talking about for years, or even something like "Falsettos", I'm thinking Logo for that one. TV would be great for something like "Grand Hotel" as well.

I thought that the other day, i think she would get Oscar number 3.

I said this on another board, but I'll say it again.
The next Movie Musical made should not be about showbiz. We've had a lot of those, and they're too obvious a target for pandering to an audience by laying a "concept" on a musical.
I do think that an audience should be challenged with a conventionally-made MM (in terms of the characters just bursting into song). Here are my choices:
INTO THE WOODS
ASSASSINS
MISS SAIGON
A remake of A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC
WICKED (I'm astonished nothing has been done about this yet)
P.S. Although, frankly, I'd like to see an adaptation of WICKED from the book first.
