I love you, Mom, but you were such a Velma Kelly...but also a Fantine. More a Velma, but she never killed anybody.

As did I! What's scary is... my mom even looks like Velma, with a little bit more weight on her. The whole blonde bitch thing.

Damn my mom scares the hell out of me sometimes.

What role calls for a total bitch who sings just slightly but horrifyingly off-key while thinking she's a really good singer? That would be the one.

I'd also have to say Fanny's mother in Funny Girl.

"This is what I trained to do, and this is what I love about theater. What I love about being an actress is being able to really look into myself and understand another human being. "At the opening night party, they had clowns on stilts, jugglers, a chocolate fountain, popcorn, hot dogs. [My son] looked at me like I had been holding back. Like, 'This is what you do?' I had to tell him, 'No, no, darling. Opening nights don't usually look like this.' It's usually a dark bar with a bottle of vodka." ?Chitty Chitty Bang Bang's Jan Maxwell plus i proudly share the title of the shortest member over the age of 10 with wickedrentq!

How about Chita Rivera character from THE RINK? She was Mom to Liza, so she HAD to be strong!

Or the character of Aida. She wasn't a mom, but she was a very strong and independent character.

My mom? Ms. Hannigan or Mark's mother (if you ONLY knew...sheesh.)

"During this performance, please feel free to let your cell phones and pagers ring willy-nilly. However, do remember that there are heavily-armed knights on stage and you might well be dragged up and impaled." (Pre-curtain announcement at the new Broadway musical Monty Python's Spamalot)

Is this based on actual ability, or just who she's like?

If the latter: Kind of a mix between Prudy Pingleton and Mark's mom (I know: not very original, but if the shoe fits...).
If the former: I wouldn't subject her to getting on a stage- she hates performing (and public speaking, crowds...)

The only single mom I could think of (other than Donna- which was mentioned) was Sara Jane Moore in Assassins. I didn't want to offend anyone, and then realized I didn't remember whether or not she was single at the time, anyway. ^^;;
I second Donna in Mama Mia, though.
