On the train headed up to NYC and in the rare position of having an unfilled theater slot for a weekend trip. Tomorrow night I’m seeing Kimberly Akimbo but tonight is open. I’ve been leaning toward 1776, more out of curiosity about it as a theater experiment than a deep desire to see it.
Would love to hear pros and cons on that and any other thoughts on what anyone thinks is must-see theater — plays or musicals.
Thanks!
1776 is a great show!! Don’t listen to what the critics said about it. It’s a modern take on this classic show. I would recommend it to anyone as it enters its final weeks.
No problem! Hope you enjoy it!
Just keep in mind, not everyone feels this way - not just the critics. It tries to be modern, but really doesn't say much. I saw it in Boston, and pretty much disliked most of it. And I LOVE 1776.
Thanks! I appreciate that perspective. What else among the newer offerings would you recommend?
Into the woods is delightful, &Juliet is really fun, and most people I know have loved Some Like It Hot (I haven't seen it yet)
If you want a play, Leopoldstadt is the way to go.
The Piano Lesson or Into the Woods.
I would have said Kimberly Akimbo but you're seeing that tomorrow night. I didn't care for SLIH at all but I;m apparently the only one?
Beetlejuice, A Strange Loop or Funny Girl. If you can get tix to any of those.

It’s a great night for last minute theater tickets! It’s chilly and rainy, and every show recommended in this thread except Funny Girl is up on the TKTS board along with almost every new show of this season. Enjoy your weekend!

Thank you all for the help! I ended up seeing the magnificent Into the Woods. last night. I've been a little off my theater game lately (hadn't made up from the DC area since summertime) and was under the impression the ITW was sold out, at least for any "affordable" seat. But I ended up with a good one in the mid-mezzanine.
Now trying to decide if I'm to keep wandering today or go to a matinee.
