Posted: 9/1/05 at 5:32pmI'm assuming it's all cancelled, but I don't know.

Posted: 9/1/05 at 5:45pmThere may not be a theatre to go back to. With the outlook as it is, I don't think there will be anything in the city for quite some time. They are already looking to relocate the New Orleans Hornets for the entire NBA season--and that doesn't even start until almost November and lasts all the way until May/June. If the Hornets can't come back by June, it doesn't look good for the theatre season either.

Posted: 9/1/05 at 6:27pmThere is nothing left there. The town, so i've heard< is to be evacuated for 12 to 16 weeks. There more than likely will be no theatre there for a while. I think that people are more concerned about housing and other buildings. I'm sure they'll either postpone it or move it.

Posted: 9/1/05 at 7:44pmI am part of the NOLA Project, a new theatre company formed in New York and based in New Orleans. Our show, the cripple of inishman, had just two performances left when the hurricane hit, and we were forced to evacuate. Needless to say, the emphasis is now on saving human lives and puting the city back to working order. We don't even know if our theatre still exists, or our director's home. My thoughts, prayers, and donation money are now with the people of new orleans. id suggest the same for everyone else.

It seems a little ridiculous to be thinking about Les Mis (of all the overdone and well know musicals) when people are being lifted in aircrafts and 1000's of bodies are floating in the water.

I suppose it depends on the damage to the theater and the surrounding area.
But honestly, I think that is (and very well should be) the least of anyone's concern right now.

Posted: 9/1/05 at 8:07pmI doubt New Orleans will ever be the same
#11re: Whats going to happen to the New Orleans Theatre Season?????
Posted: 9/1/05 at 8:10pmSurely, food and clean drinking water is more of a concern than the theatre season at this time.

Yeah, THAT'S really what they're concerned about.
"Oh, no! My house is gone! Everything I ever owned is gone! But...but...how will I ever see the touring company of CATS?"

Posted: 9/1/05 at 8:14pmYou guys, lay off. It may not have come off as very sensitive but I don't think they meant to come off that way. Obviously it isn't their first concern - that goes without saying. But there are far less trivial threads that have been started since this hurricane hit and you don't see people writing "why are you talking about Matt's last day in Piazza when people are in crisis". It was an honest question...maybe not very well thought out, but not purposely offensive.

This reminds me of the girl at Broadway.Com who posted a thread right after 9/11/01 in which she was afraid the BC/EFA Flea Market would be postponed because of the attack on the World Trade Center.
"Self Centered" is the term that comes to mind here.

That's two days in a row you have been my hero, Popular!
Seriously, if this person had posted "When are they FINALLY going to get Les Miserables open in New Orleans so I can go see it!" then I would have been on them like stink on poop...but I didn't get the impression that they were trying to insinuate that he was saying anything like that other than perhaps the excessive use of question marks - and that's a stretch. I'll choose to give the benefit of the doubt and say it was just worded a bit poorly.
Now - minirant aside - I can't imagine that anything scheduled in New Orleans will actually go on there within the next 6 months at least. It could realistically be years before any semblance of normal is reached.

Posted: 9/1/05 at 9:38pmI doubt anything will be happening. They have already told conventions that have booked to look elsewhere (as if they really needed to tell them). It's unclear as to when the city will even be habitable again.

Posted: 9/1/05 at 9:43pmI figure they'll be writing a lot of "rain" checks to season subscribers...

Posted: 9/1/05 at 9:50pmIt was the 'poorly written' part that irked me. I could have dealt with one exclamation mark at the end, or one question mark. But 10? C'mon, it's not THAT urgent of a concern.

There will be no ANYTHING in New Orleans for at least nine months.
Maybe some other city like Houston will declare itself the new home of Mardi Gras - if they really want to welcome drunkenness, public urination and "girls gone wild".
The Saints will play their games at some college stadium, most likely. Let's face it, the people with season tickets are mostly the rich whote folks who got out safely and can afford to travel.

Posted: 9/1/05 at 10:40pmCome on. This is eventually going to be a concern and a headache for theatre organizers in NO eventually anyway -- sure, it is trivial compared to the stuff going on right now, but it doesn't mean we have to pretend it's not an issue. It is.

This is slightly off topic but I just wanted to say that I live in the Northern part of Louisiana which is being flooded not with water but with people from the Southern parishes who are fleeing the devastation. And although I've not been surprised by the kindness and generousity that has been extended by the Northern communities to many of our neighbors in need, I have been VERY surpised by the patience, gratitude, lack of bitterness and anger that many of the victims have displayed. So many are just grateful for their lives, despite having lost so much.
And you'd be surprised that so many have a sense of humor about the matter. Maybe the shock hasn't set in yet and nerves are not yet frayed by having to sleep too many nights on the floors of over-taxed relatives or friends. But so far, people are almost eerily nice.
My point is, I don't think that many of those people would begrudge anyone the entertainment of arguing about frivolous concerns.

Posted: 9/1/05 at 10:55pmMany people from New Orleans have all moved to Birmingham. The Lion King begins next week in Birmingham. The Lion King has donated many tickets to the Red Cross and is going to invited all the victims to see The Lion King. I thought that was amazing. What a job to be able to let the victims forget about what happend for 3 hours. Thats why I love theatre.....
