When have all the best musical nominees been successful?

Has there ever been a year where all the best musical nominees have been successful or close to it? Do you think this years line up could do it? I know people are doubting Groundhog Day can make it, but as of right now the grosses don't seem too low. Plus Great Comet will see a drop post Groban, no doubt. But as of right now it seems all the best musical nominees are sitting pretty comfortably. Can this be sustained?

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels did not recoup on Broadway. It came close....80% per Playbill.

Missed it by that much....

The article suggests the Broadway producers were to get money from the cast album and tour but that was in the future.

RM, do you not know what marketing people do? Because I promise you the producers of GROUNDHOG DAY have them on staff. And they know perfectly well whether the title draws ticket buyers or turns them away.

They didn't HAVE to call it GROUNDHOG DAY, after all. They could have called it PUNXATAWNEY! (with an exclamation point).

Adaptations keep the name of the original (sometimes adding "the musical" precisely BECAUSE theater tickets are very expensive and a lot of people want to know what they will see for their hundreds of dollars. A lot of adaptations fail because nobody involved has an original idea and is just going through the motions of reproducing the source material with a bunch of tunes. But the general public doesn't know that.
