I agree with BillyLawlor, I think Bernadette's rendition of it, with the hoarsness and the crying was perfect. I think it made the audience feel for the character.

umm i dont know, i tthink it made the audience think, omygod, can bernadette get through this song without injuring her voice and creating vocal nodes???? you have to admit it was quite scary, i didnt think shed get through it.
lemme repeat i dont hate bernie, i was just scared and not comfortable watching her, i was scared for bernie, not rose...
I got that feeling a little bit, too. The hoarseness definitely sounds real, and when she went into "I Had A Dream- a dream about you, June", It was definitely there, and I did get worried a little bit. But see- that feeling in you in real. You're worried about whether she'll get through it so much. That's what they want. Rose is so mixed with emotions that she may not be able to get through it. Than again, its one thing to be worried about Rose and Bernadette. I dunno- I just ocnfused myself. But altogether, I loved it, and I think everything she did worked for Rose. THE END!
yah worried that ROSE wont get through it, NOT Bernie, lol
You think Rose's vocals are hard? What about the women who have to be Effie, or Lorrel 8 shows a week????? Can they sound hoarse? God no, it would SUCK! That's what I'm talking about...
In my experience with Dreamgirls, Effies have just as checkered a history as Momma Roses. Effies generally don't get through eight performances a week, and many do lose their voice or sound hoarse. Lorell has the one killer number, but it's a lot less demanding than Effie's role.
But consider this... Effie has a tough first act, and then disappears for long stretches of Act Two.
In a show with about two and a half hours of material, Rose is offstage for maybe 20 minutes total (around 2 minutes for "Little Lamb," five minutes for "If Momma Was Married," five-six minutes for "All I Need Is The Girl," and then in Act Two, about five minutes for "You Gotta Get a Gimmick," and then the sections of the Gypsy strip that don't involve Rose in the wings. When Rose is not singing, invariably, she's screaming at someone. Now that's a workout.
