I'm hoping Company. Yes, it's rooted to a specific time and place, but that may be in its favor.

Realistically in 100 years? All the ones that are considered classics now

In 250 years? West Side Story and Gypsy. Maybe a Little Night Music. Updated On: 1/18/15 at 11:23 PM

Why must it be an entire century or more for a show to be considered a classic?

"In 250 years? West Side Story and Gypsy."

Aren't those already considered classics by many?

I think that many of his shows are already considered classics. Sweeney Todd has the most potential due to the fact that the music and story are both dramatic and entertaining. It also is pretty timeless and will probably survive the test of time.

If you think of how many operas and plays have really stood the test of time over the centuries, who knows how many musicals in general of what's been created in the past century will stay in the public consciousness.

Granted there's much more preservation these days.

Whatever show(s) you suggest, can we also discuss which actor's great-great-great grandchildren we should dreamcast as the leads.

That is an interesting point Mr. Nowack. If we think back to the biggest hits of 1915 (100 years ago), the only one that has any kind of life at all is Very Good Eddie. There were more musicals written back then than now, and yet that show is the only one remembered, and I think people consider it to be more of a fun blast to the past rather than a genuine classic, even if the score is wonderful.

Hmm.

Sweeney? Nor boring.
Into the Woods? Not boring.
Forum? Not boring.
Sunday? Nor boring.
Company? Not boring

Why do we have to limit ourselves to just one? They are all classics with new generations rediscovering them

What could be more classic than Forum, his bigger hit, with source material which has defined "classic" for two millennia?

Have fun telling that to:

-His 8 Grammy Awards
-His 8 Tony Awards
-His 9 Drama Desks
-An OBIE
-His 5 Laurence Olivier Awards

EDIT: Okay, so he has won so many awards it's hard to keep track....the point is: he is very acclaimed!

I could have sworn he had more Drama Desks, Showface.

Honestly, I'll probably be dead, so it won't matter.

There are Shakespeare companies putting on all Shakespeare shows - even those that aren't so good.
There are Gilbert & Sullivan societies putting on all 14 G&S shows - even those that aren't so good.

Will there be such groups for Sondheim? Richard Rodgers (with Hart and Hammerstein)?

If everyone is speaking Chinese by then why would a musical about Japan created by a bunch of white guys be of interest?
