Posted: 6/8/09 at 12:23amfrom what i heard from friends who were at the dress rehearsal the "Andrew Lloyd..." line went over better at the dress then it appeared to on TV. Liza knew Mitch was going to single her out. Yes, I'm a fan of RoA, and I was not 100% thrilled with the performance tonight, and he ongoing sound issues didn't help.

you are all twats. support theatre. don't wish upon the demise of anything.
absolutely appalling.

Posted: 6/8/09 at 12:32amI actually didn't think Shrek was that terrible. Okay, the beginning was a tiny bit boring with Shrek, Donkey, and Fiona. But, I think it was a cute number. I know, that doesn't help make it scream "look at me," like it should have to get people interested. But, Christopher Sieber was great.

Exactly, why are you hoping for hundreds of people to be put out of work, simply because you disliked a show.

Id(io)t: we are not wishing the demise of any show - rather just talking business. Broadway is a business and if you don't sell tickets; your show won't stay open.
Furthermore, I don't think Joe W. Plumber from Middleberg Iowa is going to hop on this board one night and says "Gosh, Marsha let's cancel our trip to NYC because bwaybri2 from Bristol says Guys and Dolls is done for".
Idt, go have a drink of whatever Liza was drinking and relax.

I love Amy Spanger. I wish she would be cast in better shows. Rock of Ages looked like a mess and after the show Hair put on, Rock of Ages REALLY looked like a mess.
On a positive note, Next to Normals performance made me REALLY want to see the show. Hair as well.

reasons to be pretty will announce closing by tuesday or wednesday, possibly by next sunday or in two weeks, i'm guessing (which is sad, because i liked it a lot)
Guys and Dolls will run to Labor Day weekend, latest Columbus Day weekend by some miracle.
Next to Nomal, tough one to call, but probably Labor Day. I just don't think the show, even with the wins, compared to the other performances was anything memorable.

Guys and Dolls will go first I'd bet. How could you get Guys and Dolls so wrong i'll never know! Sit Down You're Rockin The Boat is one of my favourite musical numbers and I just hate what they've done to it in this version. And I hate the tacky way the scenery is done with the projections.
Next to Normal may survive a bit longer than I thought... sadly, I don't see Shrek surviving much past the end of this year, it does well in tourist/school holidays it seems but not anywhen else.
9 to 5 I dont think will suffer at all and hopefully go from strength to strength - I can see it lasting the season for sure.

Posted: 6/8/09 at 8:30amI really think that Next to Normal will be around for a while. The grosses keep on increasing and with Alice Ripley winning the Tony, tickets will increase. How much? Not sure. As much as I love Shrek, they will hurt and will most likely be gone by November

Next to Normal has been seeing very good increases in grosses; they won Score over Elton John, and their performance was one of the best of the night. I've been hearing a lot of people becoming interested in the show because of their performance.
It'll be around at least until the end of year, I'd say.
This thread is pretty much already settled though, since Reasons to be Pretty announced their closing for next week.

Posted: 6/8/09 at 4:08pmI doubt it's going anywhere, but Mamma Mia's performance was the worst of the night in my opinion. Just plain painful.

Posted: 6/8/09 at 6:42pmI'm going to go out on a limb here and say that the first shows to close post-Tonys will be the ones that cannot make enough money to cover their weekly costs. Call me a hater if you must, but I'm just keeping it real.

I think that other than reasons, nothing will close until Labor Day. Shrek and Guys and Dolls will at least last until then, what with name recognition alone during the touristy summer months. But I expect both, especially Shrek to die hard when school gets back in session.
Rock of Ages, Billy, West Side Story, and Hair will both be just fine for a while, for different reasons of course.
And I have a good feeling about the future of next to normal. I wouldn't have thought this when it opened months ago, but I think it has built up a strong fanbase and word of mouth. I believe it will last at least through the summer, and longer. The performance only helped it, as many of my friends who already were not interested in the show now are. Ticket sales are keeping steady enough that it really will catch on, if it hasn't already.
