Which will close first? Addams Family or American Idiot?

I have an actual bet going with my friend on which show of 2010 will last longer. Addams Family or American Idiot. I have my opinion, but I was curious what others think.

i think that the both shows will have a good run. Probably American Idiot will close 1st, but hey you never know! I was talking to one guy who works at the Lunt-F and he said that bebe & nathan signed for a year. as long as their in it or other famous people come in, the show will stay open for a while.

Depends on how long Nathan and Bebe will stay with Addams.

American Idiot isn't doing as well as I expected it to be. Exposure from the Tonys may help it though, at least for the summer. Who knows.

Sadly, I think AMERICAN IDIOT

The Addams Family is widely recognized, family-friendly, and they've got Nathan Lane until March 2011.

American Idiot is also widely recognized (as an album), in the same vein as most jukebox musicals, but it has subject matter that sends parents elsewhere to other shows for their kids...plus their target audience (unless you are a mega theatre addict) is not generally engaged by theatre.

Based on the reaction of last Sunday's crowd, The Addams Family will be around for a while. Certainly as long as Nathan is there at least.

American Idiot isn't doing as well as I expected it to be. Exposure from the Tonys may help it though, at least for the summer. Who knows.

Since the reviews came out it has been grossing over $750,000. What are you expecting? It to be grossing in the millions?

American Idiot seems to be doing fine. It just opened and is grossing in the 700's. Well past whatever its weekly nut is likely to be. Sheesh. It's grossing higher than Memphis, FELA or Million Dollar Quartet at present. And the summer months are coming which should certainly be even better.

There have to be better topics than speculation about when things will close.

do you people still not understand what ADVANCE tix sales are? AI had a good advance of about 1.5 million maybe more. After that grammy performance they sold about 1 million dollars in tix. Though after the reviews they didn't sell a thing.

The summer is coming and their numbers will be ok. But if they don't win that tony award they are done this year. They will not make it past Jan.

Addams family will close when Nathan and Bebe leave.

I think American Idiot will run for a few years. They'll probably get a boost from the Tony Awards and then if they need to they could stunt cast from the same pool of "celebrities" that went in and out of Rent.

I do not think that an award for Best Lighting at the Tony's will give the show a boost.

IMHO, American Idiot will lose to FELA!

Business will remain good if Nathan Lane keeps saying he's going to retire from musicals. Everyone wants to see him live. He's got a huge following beyond Broadway because for many Americans, he IS Broadway - loud, showy, pompous and talented as hell.

Remember when Hair opened to raves. It stopped selling out way to quickly & now is almost on life support

I would have to say American Idiot bites the dust first. It will probably be gone in 6 months.

Addams Family reminds me of this season's Shrek. At the moment, that is. I think once replacements come in, it'll die. Give it a year?

As long as Nathan is still in The Addams Family it'll be fine. I think American Idiot is attracting a huge audience but the problem is that audience doesn't have any money where The Addams Family audience too.

i dont think IDIOT will be gone in 6 months.. but being in the st. james is bad for them.. it is way too big a theater if ticket sales start dropping

Any chance this show could transfer to another theatre should the ticket sales drop? Honestly, the St. James should be ridiculously redesigned: barely any show can fit in the space, and it's too large to offer shows which don't need the space...
What about the Walter Kerr? Could AI possibly fit there? Otherwise the Hirschfeld, should Hair close anytime soon...

Night Music has the Kerr until Lansbury and ZJones' contracts are up. Is that through January? The grosses nose dive when even one of them is out. When both are gone, nobody is going to pay to see the show.

They're contracted through the end of June with stars replacing them. It's looking like Debbie Reynolds for Angela.

Definitly Addams Family. Even if Nathan & Bebe don't extend past March 2011, I see the show lasting until at least summer 2011; if not longer. Addams has a 15 million advance, while AI only has a 2.5 million advance. AI still needs to find an audience, and hopefully the Tony's will help. We'll see how AI does come September.

Sadly, I'm willing to bet both Fela! and La Cage, despite those two being the Tony front-runners, will close before either American Idiot or The Addams Family. Don't get me wrong: I liked all these shows, except Addams. And although I think Fela! and La Cage are the two best musicals of the season (and should win their respective "Best Musical" categories), neither is as known a commodity as The Addams Family. Even American Idiot, which is only riding on the wave of Green Day's popularity, is more of a known commodity than either Fela! or La Cage. I'm hoping I'm wrong, but I see these two shows lasting quite some time. With American Idiot, I really do think this is a good thing, as I enjoyed the crap out of that show. With Addams Family, I just give a heavy sigh and hope for better things for the cast.

AMERICAN IDIOT will close first, the familiarity of THE ADDAMS FAMILY is what will keep it selling. Nathan Lane isn't a big factor to overseas tourists (most wouldn't know him), they do know THE ADDAMS FAMILY brand though.
