"I think producers would think VERY seriously before signing her up for an open run."
Part of it is that producers have insurance on their productions for when big stars miss. If they have a poor attendance record, the insurance rates either go through the roof or the insurance company won't insure the producer's next production.
Well, Donna Murphy of course...and Victoria Clark. Hey, maybe they should come back to Broadway in a show together. What show??? Mmmm, there's this show that Sondheim wrote in the 70s with two brilliant female leads....
Bernadette Peters.
Meryl Streep.
Jane Krakowski.
I suspect that Donna Murphy did big-time damage to herself because of her poor attendance record in Wonderful Town.
Nah. Other Tony winning actresses with worse reputations and much worse behavior returned to Broadway (several times, in fact), even to win more Tonys.

A year ago I would have very emphatically said Megan Mullally, but my wish was granted!
What evey happened to Marcia Mitzman of Tommy (and Chess)? I kept waiting to see her back and she completely disappeared.

And Christine Ebersole. It's already been too long for me.
Agree with Sarah Uriarte Berry.
Also, I can't believe I forgot Toni Collette.
Toni Collette. Brilliant suggestion, Ray.
Donna Murphy, Donna Murphy, Donna Murphy.
Sara Ramirez was another fine thought.
LOVE Marcia Mitzman on the TOMMY OBCR.
Her "Smash the Mirror" is outstanding.
