Yes, the main cast for Wicked provides their own photos. I am not sure about Rent though. Usually on Broadway they will have headshots with them that they will send out, but since it is a tour, I am not too sure what they will have with them.
It does not necessarilly have to be a photo, it can be a cd insert or flyer.

Posted: 5/29/09 at 4:13pmI sent a letter to Alice Ripley and Aaron Tveit last tuesday, nothing yet. It takes time. My friend waited a month for the Wicked pictures for me so, you really do have to be patient. :)

Posted: 5/29/09 at 11:17pmWEBmanBway, I'm actually going to call the theatres in Denver Colorado and Seattle Washington to see if they will relay the letters if I send it to them. If not, My friend is seeing the show about 20min from where he lives in New York in late July, early August and he said I could send it to him and he would give it to them/stage manager for me. Once I find out about Denver and Seattle i'll let you know.

I just got a signed playbill from 'reasons to be pretty'. Which was pretty cool.
But somebody wrote my name in all caps with an exclamation point in pink sharpie in the upper corner before they sent it back. I'm assuming it was the stage manager because everyone else signed in silver. But it put the biggest smile on that face seeing that all snuck into the corner of the playbill. =D

Megan, I agree.
BwayBoundJoe, I sent Angela a shameless amount of things and a SASE so all she had to do was pop it in the mail. I sent, in total, 3 CD inserts, 1 videotape sleeve and 2 DVD sleeves. I explained why each meant so much to me.
In this pic you will see my autographed Mame CD booklet, which she inscribed to me. I know in my heart no autograph will ever mean more to me.
As you can see, it pays to use a SASE and write a note that really shows a performer your appreciation.
Oh yes, and Patti took about 2 weeks to get back to me. She and Angie are the only two performers I have sent items to request autographs, although I have written letters to other performers.

I want to send a SASE but most of all I want to make sure she gets it, did she write back to you at least? like a small note along with you plethora of items?

No note, and the same for Patti. However, as I recall from the summer of 2007 some who merely wrote Angie or just asked for a signed playbill (she threw one of those into my package, by the way, what a doll!) did get copies of the same note that went something like this:
Dear (insert name), Thank you for your lovely letter. Your encouragement has given me a renewed burst of energy to continue acting.
Love to you,
Angela Lansbury
So it really depends upon the performer.
I say, if you really want Carole to send you a signed headshot, ask her directly for one. Ask her also that if she doesn't have one to send you a signed playbill in its stead.
Just be sure to use tact and you're practically guaranteed to get one of those two.

I got got an opening night playbill from Next to Normal signed by the entire cast.
Also, Angela Lansbury took less than a week for me.

That included Jennifer Bernhart from Ave Q, Sutton Foster, John Tartaglia, Chris Seiber (sp?) Brian, and Haven Burton from shrek, Sierra and Faith in TLM, Aaron and Alice in N2N, and Megan Hilty and SJB in 9to5. I wrote to him 3 years ago and had a quick response from him. I also wrote to his wife Sarah Jessica Parker at the same time and they enclosed 2 signed separate photos of them in 1 envelope.

Posted: 6/7/09 at 12:16amJust got back from Spring Awakening in Louisville, been gone for two days, I had one of my envelopes and a Giant one (that I didnt sent out) in my room. One was from Faith Prince, who gave me a beautiful 8 X 10 photo of her as ursula, and in the envelope I got back, a disney photo card of Sierra and Sean. I only wrote to Faith and Sierra. Guess he had extra's and they were trying to get rid of them before his last. Sierra and Faith's are personalized. They are extremely nice for taking time out to send me something.
