To madbrian above, who suggested Lea Delaria: brilliant choice!
I saw her do "Boys from Syracuse" in LA about 15 years ago and she actually reminded me a little of Merman, whom I saw live when I was 12. (Delaria was playing a woman, BTW. She does transgender stuff brilliantly, but she doesn't have to rely on it.)
I forget what my choice was when I opened this thread. I vote for Lea Delaria now.

Posted: 7/20/11 at 4:06pmCould we please stop talking about Streisand filming Gypsy and playing Mama Rose? The woman is going to be 70 next April. What - is Louise going to be 50 in Act I? Gee, I think Meryl Streep would be a fabulous 50 year old Louise, especially in Act II. And Hugh Jackman could play Tulsa. What other male in Hollywood can dance? And they can reunite Barbra with Omar Sharif as Herbie. Maybe Kristin Chenoweth could be Baby June. Wait a minute - knock Streisand out of the lead of the movie and replace her with Angela Lansbury. WOW! And Barbra could play Mr. Goldstone and concentrate on directing it.

Posted: 7/20/11 at 5:27pmLea Delaria as Rose? I'd rather sit in an audience slicing into my flesh with a rusty razor than have to watch her scream at the audience for 3 hours. I honest to God can't imagine anything worse.

Posted: 7/20/11 at 6:00pmI would have loved to have seen, back in the day when they were each the right age, and both of them alive, either Madeline Kahn or Judy Kaye as Rose.

Perhaps Lea Delaria could play the cow.
She'd still find a way to scream at the audience.

Posted: 7/20/11 at 11:17pmI have to say I agree with Carlos. I thought the revival with Patti was unncessary and if they do it again they'll put someone inappropriate in the role. Besides that, it just doesn't need to be done for a very long time.

Posted: 7/20/11 at 11:46pmI think Beth Leavel would be great. She would have also been a great Fanny in Funny Girl. I would also love to see Audra tackle the role.

Posted: 7/21/11 at 2:57amAudra would be great. The score might be a little low for her voice, but I'd still love to see her play it.
