I love Donna Murphy and know she'd probably be incredible, but I honestly have a tough time picturing her in the role.
When I see the phrase "the ____ estate", I imagine a vast mansion in the country full of monocled men and high-collared women receiving letters about productions across the country and doing spit-takes at whatever they contain. -Kad

She's too old now, but when she was age appropriate, I would have loved to have seen Kathy Bates as Rose.

As for Murphy, I think she'd be a knockout on all the songs, but somehow I don't see her as Rose.

While I agree that a revival of Gypsy is not warranted in the next few years, that shouldn't take away from the fun of casting ideas. That said, I think Lea DeLaria would be an interesting outside-the-box idea.

I have a feeling that if the movie version does get made there will be no more theatrical versions until well after the movie gets a chance to show it's legs...i for one am hoping the STREISAND Gypsy is filmed...enough with the Broadway versions...give this old "warhorse" a rest...at least until WARHORSE comes out in movie version...lol...which by the way comes into movie houses this Decemeber...

"You think I'm going to stand around and let Sutton Foster star in the next annual revival of Gypsy!!?"- Patti/Rose, Forbidden Broadway.

Why can't Sutton do it now? Rose is always played by a woman pushing 60 when the real Rose was 29 around the time when the show starts. Granted, I'm not clamoring for a new revival, but why can't a 36-40 year old tackle it?

I think it comes down to having an actress with enough presence and gravitas to act as the catalyst for almost the entire show, something that typically comes with age and experience. I find Sutton enjoyable, but I don't think she has that quite yet.

And she has to look like a mother to the adult actresses who play June and Louise.
