… and?! Not even a “… but.” WTF?!
I felt the need to defend her talent and range. But thankfully, others have beat me to it.
she’s amazing in that episode
she’d be a fun mama in “Chicago”

It's so nice to see all the love for this talented actress. I guess this late in her career, we can only imagine what could have been had she ventured to B'way.

how insulting
you’ve obviously never saw her performances in ‘who will love my children’ , ‘return of the soldier’ or ‘a streetcar named desire’
she’s a damn fine actress
"
How absurd. I've seen her in tons of movies. She plays herself in every one, from State Fair to Carnal Knowledge to Tommy to Magic to Grumpy Old Men. She plays the Ann-Margaret character. I like her a lot, she's got tons of screen presence and she has an essential warmth about her that is very appealing. But she's as much the same person in every film as John Wayne or Bruce Willis or however many movie stars you want to name are in their movies. Meryl Streep or Olivier she ain't.
If you need to inflate people's abilities to enjoy them, that says more about you than it does about them.

Based on this assessment and the opinions of others in this thread, is it not just as likely that she was specifically called to play the "Ann Margaret type" in many roles and that she has the range and capabilities to handle many different things?
It is possible, but I've never seen it. At any rate, there was zero insulting about my OP, which pointed out talents I felt she had and said I genuinely liked her.
It is a shame we couldn't have seen A-M on Broadway. She certainly had the acting chops to even pull off Blanche Dubois on television. Who knows - perhaps she could have done a credible Norma in Sunset Boulevard as well.
"Ann Margret is wonderful but she always plays Ann Margret"
Ha! Seriously with this?!?!?! Sounds like someone hasn't been out of the house or seen a movie since 1965.

THIS. Roger Smith was diagnosed with myasthenia gravis, a disorder that disrupts the transmission of nerve signals to the muscles, causing severe muscle weakness. This played a big part in the projects she chose to do. She didn't want to make the long-term commitment that a Broadway show would require of her because of this.
It definitely wasn't for lack of talent. I was fortunate enough to see her on the stage twice, in Atlantic City and at Radio City Music Hall and she LIT up the stage.
A true triple threat and as one poster accurately stated: a national treasure.

If I'm not mistaken she's also lost a lot of mobility in recent years. I remember her relying fairly heavily on using a wheelchair in the tour of The Best Little Whorehouse she did, and that was almost 20 years ago now.
At any rate, I think she would have been a splendid Desiree in Night Music back in the day, and I do think she would be able to bring a grounded earthiness to Madame Armfeldt if she could be tempted to the stage now
Dunno what performance of WHOREHOUSE you saw but I saw this tour and she was on her feet and even did an extensive hoedown at the curtain call with all the dancers.

I saw it in Cleveland (can't tell you where in the tour schedule that was, since it was 20 or so years ago now). You'll also see the wheelchair in the small handful of bootleg clips that are on Youtube, notably in "Little Old Bitty Pissant Country Place." Yes, she was not in the wheelchair through the whole show, but I definitely remember it being there and her going back to it a number of times during the show.
It may have been a holdover from her motorcycle accident in 2000, so maybe not an ongoing issue these days.
Oh, dear. You musta been quite young and not paying much attention to WHOREHOUSE. That wheelchair is part of Miss Mona’s history and she uses it as her throne. You see, Miss Mona started her sex worker career as one of the legendary Wulla Jean’s “girls.” Miss Mona inherited the chicken ranch from her so the wheelchair represents the brothel’s history and is honoring Wulla Jean’s memory. That’s why Miss Mona “goes to it” and uses it to sit in, like a “throne.”
Here’s that wheelchair during the original Broadway run of THE BEST LITTLE WHOREHOUSE IN TEXAS.
That clip from the tour is exciting to watch ! Too bad this didn't end up on Broadway.
With the horrible reviews 'The Little Prince' is getting, maybe Ann-Margret can replace the star and make it a must-see hit, at 82 years old ?
Just a wild thought...

A friend of mine used to lease his lakefront home in Lake Tahoe (a very grand place) to her and her husband when she was performing at Harrah’s Lake Tahoe. Of all the stars who stayed there (Sammy Davis Jr, Cher, Tom Jones, Liberace, etc.) he said Ann-Margaret was the sweetest and most down-to-earth of them all. I just thought it’s nice to hear what a person is like off stage.
