"Ummm... there was no new song just for Brandy. There was "The Sweetest Sounds" wich opened the film with both Brandy and Paolo Montalban, but it wasn't just for Brandy.
There was "Falling in Love with Love" for Bernadette Peters and "There's Music in You" for Whitney Huston, but no additional solo song for the Cinderella character."
Weren't those songs taken from other Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals?
Brandy was an absolute DISASTER in the recent TV movie.
And I'm not racist, but the interracial parent/child stuff didn't work for me. I remember it confusing me a lot when it first aired, when I was younger.

Indeed they were. It would have been odd for them to sick in new songs by other composers...
wait, are you positive a recording wasn't released of the one with bernadette peters and whitney houston?
that's unfortunate, that would have been something i would have liked to have! =(
there are audios floating around, but a CD was never released due to a dispute between Brandy and Whitney's record labels...
Funny how you can make a racist comment, if you preface it with
"I'm not racist, but..."
they adopted him. what's the big deal? and Cinderella was not biologically related to her stepmother and stepsisters...

zee emcee- i didn't want to say it, but you did, and i agree.
i think the disney version will be the only bearable version of it.

CATS - I stand corrected on the additional songs. My point was that even ABC seemed to think the score needed padding with additional R&H songs, suggesting that the original score was a little light weight. But the problem was that none of the *three* additional songs fit the rest of the score either - so my original point stands, I think, that it is not a Broadway caliber score. On the other hand some of the original songs were marvelous. I am a fan in particular of "Ten Minutes Ago".

In the 1965 version, they added
-"The Loneliness of the Evening" (Cut from "South Pacific) - R&H
For the 1999 version, they
-Added "The Sweetest Sound" ("No Strings") - RR
-Spliced together "The Prince Is Giving A Ball" and "Royal Dressing Room Scene" from the original - R&H
-Added "Falling in Love With Love" ("The Boys From Syracuse") - Rogers and Hart
-Added "There's Music in You" ("Main Street to Broadway") - R&H
For the record, I love the 1999 version and its racially confused cast.
Sorry, you've got a little mistake in your cast list.
JEN CODY as Joy!!!!
Brilliant!
Agreed! I love Jen. She's hilarious!

I remember my sister (at age 9) asking my parents if the queen had an affair, because she knew the prince couldn't possibly be Whoopi Goldberg and Victor Garber's biological offspring. Interesting how we have two adopted cousins and that option never occured to her.

While the ABC version isn't perfect, it's still a lot of fun, and fairly well cast. And I am really sad a recording wasn't made, simply for Bernadette and Whitney's renditions of the songs.
I think the additional songs fit the score well and should be used for future stagings like the recent tour with Eartha Kitt. I hate that RNH Theatricals does not seem to offer this script version. But, I hated that they cut "Falling in Love With Love" though the Stepmother was played by a man.
I also enjoyed the additional reprises of "The Sweetest Sounds" and "Ten Minutes Ago" that were added for the tour. It would have been perfect if they had only included the "Royal Dressing Room Scene" and "The Loneliness of the Evening". The new prologue was really awesome too though I don’t remember what song Eartha Kitt sang for it. Her "There’s Music in You" was outstanding though.

My school did it too this fall and I was in the chorus(seniority sucks), but it was still a lot of fun. Our stepsisters were PERFECT, but our Cinderella could have been a little better, her voice cracked every night of our preformances during "Ten Minutes Ago". I didn't really like the Brandy version, I wouldn't have minded it that much if Cinderella was sung by an actual soprano. I liked Paolo Montalban as the prince though. And how come for every TV version the stepsisters names are different? In the first it was Portia and Joy, the second it was Prunella and Esmerelda, and in the third it was Calliope and Minerva. Did they really have to change their names for every movie? I really hope they do a studio recording at least eventually, because I can't find the original recording anywhere. the broadway asia tour sounds wonderful! i bet it comes to broadway!!!
I bet it doesn't.
I don't think it stands a chance at the box office on Broadway. Who is your target audience here? Children whose parents would rather get the spectacle of Lion King, Mary Poppins or even Tarzan for the $100+ per ticket? "Old School" Broadway fans who would probably prefer seeing My Fair Lady or South Pacific next year? Or tourists who would rather see a show they've heard of before and which is not so old-fashioned?
I just think its time to have a chance would probably have been decades ago. It's too late for old-fashioned, medium-scaled shows like this one, even if it is R&H and even if the score is charming.
