Wicked: "Eh" or "Ick?"

"Hey, even fluffy chick flicks have a bit of depth, and there are some good ones. (If you want to tell me Pretty Woman sucks, run away first) Wicked isn't on the intellectual level of some other things, though (Caroline). I was saying that it's easily likeable for tourists looking for fun and people unfamiliar with musical theatre, that's what I mean by 'fluff'. It's not a bad thing."
my apologies for missinterpeting.
when you think about it, people, unless coming to new york to SEE caroline, aren't looking for what caroline brings. they're looking for something fun and nice and upbeat...which is probably why hairspray did so well.

Exactly! I've been saying that forever, that's why megamusicals and upbeat shows do so well, that's what you're in the mood for on vacation.
And no, I don't think non-happy-go-lucky shows are bad, I'm just trying to explain the Wicked phenomenon.

It's sad when people let their minds be made up soley by the opinions of others. Why does it matter if everyone else likes it? It's ridiculous when people hate something only because it's popular.

I was eh for about a month. Now, I'm a huge ICK.
I was gleeful at the Tony Award going to Avenue Q. There was so much schadenfreude going on in my row it was hard to restrain myself from screaming "Wicked Sucks!" when the award came up.

Ah, sweet memories. My dad was looking at me like I was completely insane when Avenue Q won. Then again, hopping around the room in glee will get you looks like that. :)
I have to say, though, with the power of hindsight and having seen Caroline, or Change not long after the awards, I would have given the Tony to that show.

Posted: 8/25/04 at 2:15pmI've actually written a couple of long, detailed posts about why I didn't like Wicked that maybe I will search later and repost here. I consider Wicked the worst kind of failure, the kind of failure that only comes from seeing a huge potential almost completely wasted and destroyed.

Posted: 8/25/04 at 2:51pmIt's interesting that people read anything negative about Wicked as "bashing." I have actually a very carefully considered critique of that show based on the utter disappointment with what I saw onstage. Not only do I feel it blew an absolutely perfect opportunity to make a great musical out of some very clever source material, I feel it isn't even successful at what people claim it's good at, these people including but not limited to Idina's comment at the Tony's that it celebrates the friendship of women. No, I don't think it even manages to do that half-succesfully.

Posted: 8/25/04 at 3:12pmDerek: I find the score completely uninspired. Granted not every song has to be an out-and-out winner, but a new low was reached with that television commercial jingle "One Fine Day in the Emerald City." To me, it is a show that was all about the trappings and forgot the essential elements that make theater magical. I could have been watching holograms performing the show and would have gotten as much from it.

Posted: 8/25/04 at 3:15pmSee this is better. Now we're discussing and not arguing. Isnt it better people? I happen to be a huge Wicked fan and Im not at all bothered by this. Everyone has their own opinion and can state it, whether it be good or bad. As long as we discuss like humans and not animals :)

Posted: 8/25/04 at 3:48pmI find Wicked to be a sucessful attempt of taking the idea of a book and turning it into something completely different. If you read the book you will understand how the musical does celebrate friendship. The musical did make the story more family oriented, if the book was put on the stage it would have been made for people 15 or 16 and up, this version is for kids around 7 and up. I also enjoyed how wicked brought the story closer to the Wizard of Oz, instead of being a little side plot. The book is more political based, while the musical is very character and emotionally based. The whole plot with the Lion, Tin Man, and Scarecrow was done much better in the musical than it was in the book, and that was one of my favorite things about the play. So wicked gets a "wow" from me, not an "ick, or an "eh"

Posted: 8/25/04 at 3:52pmYeah me too. As I said b4, it must be very difficult to adapt a novel into a musical, specially knowing how tough ur crowd is lol. I think they did a very good job with it. Even the Gregory likes it! A wow from me too

Posted: 8/25/04 at 3:54pmactually, the book doesn't really celebrate a friendship. glinda actually doesn't have that big of a part in the book. it's more about elphabas life.
