Posted: 8/24/04 at 4:29pmIts a show people good lord get over yourselves if you dont like it dont go!!! its really really simple if you like it good for you go see it and enjoy thats what broadway is supposed to do to you if you want to post post have an I LOVE WICKED thread if you hate it, hate it post your opinion is an I HATE WICKED thread really nessecary??? I agree that it is nice to have a variety of opinions posted but wouldnt we like to keep this place fairly nice and positive. I know taht i certainly have HATED shows and all i say is that i honestly didnt care about it. While i thought wicked was ok i have a LOT of respect for a show that brings in that many young ppl to the theater adn maybe seeing Wicked will inspire them to go see other things and then they can see what some of you consider "better" theater. My friends recently went to see Wicked loved and the woman next to them said well yeah it was good but if you wanna see something better go see Caroline. Not that i am saying its a better show but it is different from most musicals and my friends went and loved it! People the fact is these kids are giving broadway soo much money and that is a GOOD thing it is what is going to keep broadway alive!!! While Wicked may not be the best show I thank god for all the ppl its brought to broadway.

Posted: 8/24/04 at 4:35pmI totally agree, if wicked is bringing in its maximum amount of money everyday, then thats what is important. It is bringing broadway money, and its giving people steady jobs in a time where it can be very hard to find work. Wicked could be argued on both sides, beign good or bad, and thats what entertainment is about. When something is good or bad you talk about it and thats what gives entertainment its boom.

Posted: 8/24/04 at 4:38pmWell said Gust! It doesn't really matter how good Wicked is or isn't. What matters is that it is bringing theatre to an audience that may not have even realized what theatre was. For that I am grateful.

Posted: 8/24/04 at 4:42pmI find it interesting how everyone gets so worked up whenever some one posts something Wicked-related on the board, but when a thread (like this one) portrays the show negatively, it's alright? Hmm...

It doesn't really matter how good Wicked is or isn't.
Read that senctence again. I'm sure you didn't really mean it. Of course it matters if it's good. We can't excuse a show's every flaw just because it's (*groan*) popular. I think Wicked is more "eh" than "ick." It isn't awful, but average. So while I'm glad that people are being introduced to theater because of it, I'm not going to give it an artistic free pass because of that.

Posted: 8/24/04 at 4:44pmI used to love it, and then I saw better. I like it a lot now, but I know it's not the best musical in the world now.

"I just don't know what I would do without MisterMatt's obligatory "but I really can see the other side of the story, Namo" responses to my critical posts."
Namo, you flatter yourself. My response was not that at all. It had nothing to do with "the other side of the story". I don't defend the obsessive Wicked posts. I just don't act so surprised they exist or that they are the downfall of musical theatre. I know you're in an inflammatory mood right now, but you know very well I have no obligatory responses to your critical posts. But if you really want all my posts to be about you, then I can certainly try harder...

Posted: 8/24/04 at 5:33pmI really enjoyed Wicked, and the I must say that 'For Good' bore so much relevance to my life at the time I saw so it was very touching for me. I can see why some people would not like it, but I don't understand all the hysteria over it, both the love and the hate.

Posted: 8/24/04 at 5:35pmI really enjoyed wicked also. It made me read the book and it has my humming tunes this much time after seeing the show. If a musical can do that to me, then in my opinion it is a good one. But i guess that might be just for me.

Matt.....I have tears in my eyes. That was a wonderful thing for you to do. I was a big Brother years ago and I know how good it can make you feel to do something for a kid that is less fortunate, in some ways, than yourself. Kudos to you!
Wicked is what it is. A great piece of entertainment. We can go over the differences from the book, we can hate or love the music, cotumes, actors, etc. But, It is a smash hit whether we like it or not. And as someone said on one of the many threads here (And it probably wasn't even a Wicked thread) It's selling tickets and getting people into the theatre. I saw it with a friend from Denver who moved to NYC over a year ago. In 11 months, he had not gone to one show. (He used to go to shows here in Denver with me all the time). We left WICKED and he said "Thank you for taking me. I now know what I have been missing and I need to see more shows'. I had taken him to see BARE the night before also. This show can be debated until hell freezes over and there are ALWAYS going to be 2 sides. I agree, this show needs to stop popping up in threads. There are other shows I look for threads on and don't see. I would love to hear peoples opinions on other shows including off-B'way shows. I will admit that I was swept away with the show when I saw it. It has really turned into an event! And I raved about it the day I got back to Denver. But now, I would not see it again when I go to NY because there are other things to see. And the CD satisfies me need to hear the music. If the tour comes to Denver, I will go. So can we all just get along and agree to disagree on this show? I was thinking last night after reading another disagreement on this show in another thread.....God help if they threw us all in a house together for a weekend and locked the doors.....a new musical would be born....Clue: The Broadway Murders - A Musical! (Can I be Uncageg, in the Study, with the WICKED T-shirt?!) All murder weapons would have to be show related!!! my second rant for the day!!!
Peace

Posted: 8/24/04 at 6:17pmLet me answer the original question before reading the rest of the thread: it was ICK! from the very beginning for me. But after the deluge of Wicked fans, it's now "ICK! *puke*".

Ehhh. It's a mixed bag for me. On one end, I adore Kristin Chenoweth and think she is an amazingly talented singer, actress, an all around great performer. I like all of her songs in Wicked. "No One Mourns the Wicked", musically, is one of my many favorite pieces in Broadway. On the other end, the great songs are not consistent. I find myself getting bored of the score after listening for a while. It bothers me to no end of what this musical could have been under the hands of better production. It should have been darker, moodier, atmospherical, angsty, and seductive. For all the should have's, it simply isn't. Instead it is mainly a pop score with mediocre, sometimes dreadful lyrics. In addition to the so-so score, I can't take Idina Menzel. Sorry. I hear all the time how POWERFUL and ouTSTANDING her voice is. I don't hear it. Her voice does not appeal to me on the recording or live. I respect that she has hoards of fans. And I respect her as a performer... but she's not my cup of tea. Worship her, fine. I'll just turn my head and listen to some Kristin. Woops. Did I just lose some future friends and enemies on this board?
That's pretty much all I have to say on the subject. What next!
#115re: Wicked: 'Eh' or 'Ick'?
Posted: 8/24/04 at 6:43pmI'd say eh...It's a decent show but I don't feel it deserves the "If it closes I'll kill myself" hype that it's getting.

Posted: 8/24/04 at 6:55pmPlease stop bashing Wicked! God, no one is doing stuff like this to Avenue Q!!! Wicked gets my YAY GO SEE IT NOW vote. I knew this would get ugly.
#117re: Wicked: 'Eh' or 'Ick'?
Posted: 8/24/04 at 7:24pmI agree that this is going to get really ugly, but I am going to give my opinion anyway. From what I have heard of the music from "Wicked" I don't like it. I don't like the lady who plays the bad witch (don't know her name) and I also don't like Chenawith (sp). Their voices sound to.....child like and Way to nasal for me to tolerate. I personally don't care to see that show. I am however a Huge fan of The Wizard of Oz but mainly Judy Garland.

Please stop bashing Wicked! God, no one is doing stuff like this to Avenue Q!!!
It really pains (yet amuses) me how Wicked fans have turned Avenue Q into the direct opponent of Wicked, just because Avenue Q won the Tony. I wonder if Wicked fans would have done the same if "Caroline, or Change" or (longshot) Boy From Oz had won - would someone be writing "God, no one is doing stuff like this to Caroline or Change!"?
My disappointment with Wicked is independent from my views of other musicals. I just didn't like how glossed over, bloated and musically-generic the work was. I think a dark, daring and stylized version would have been better. I just feel like the show sold out to the Disney family crowd.

Man, Namo, I go to one day of classes and find that you have begun a civil war!
Are things slow and you wanted the amusement?
Guys, you *do* realize that he just did this to solicit such responses...right?

seriously people, i think that is enough. all of this had been said before (over and over and over again). so let's drop it.
i really don't see the point of this thread either. most people here make their opinions on that subject very well known, so why make another thread on the subject you hate so much? especially when the "wicked" threads have been dying down, slowly but surely. what purpose can this possibly serve but to start more trouble, or was that the intention, findingnamo?
anyway, ive said all this before, and i've said what i feel should be done so that we can move on to other subects (see the link if you're interested). come on people, lets show a little maturity (on all sides of the issue) and just let it go.

I guess I will just restate this every time this thread has a new page. I did it to parody the "Chorus Line: Great or 'Eh?'" thread.

that's all well and good (you can hopefully understand why i wouldn't want to read five pages of the same stuff ive been reading since october) i just think that if the people who hate the show didn't bring it up just to bash it, then the people who love it won't feel the need to start 1000 more threads to defend it.
