Does Defying Gravity on screen need to be as big as it is on stage? Can it be? On stage, Elphaba is required to blow the roof off the cavernous Gershwin Theater as she ends the first act with a stunning visual. I don't know if that can or should be matched on screen. We're now seeing the sixth Potter movie with flying on broomsticks; can/should try to exceed that visual?

Not exactly who I want to be casted, but what I'm suspecting it to be:
Elphaba- Anne Hathaway(People have been rumoring her for a long time now)
Glinda- Amy Adams(Though she could act circles around this role, she'd be perfect for it)
Wizard- Dick Van Dyke(Who wouldn't want to see this)
Madame Morrible- Meryl Streep
Fiyero- Zac Efron, Chace Crawford, OR Adam Lambert
I'll admit, I wouldn't be suprised if this casting actually happened...
If Adams and Hathaway are cast, Fiyero would have to be a little older than Zac Efron. Think Justin Timberlake.
The mum from Sister Sister would be a wonderful Elphaba. Only because I can imagine how wonderful No Good Deed and the end of Defying Gravity would be.

What about Sara Ramirez as Elpheba and Amy Adams or Kristin Chenoweth as Glinda?
Not sure about the ages at the time it gets released but I think Sara could do wonders with that score and has the acting chops as well. She's not a huge name but is well known from Greys.

Oooh. Am like the Sara Ramierez idea.... How I wish she would come back to Broadway

Anne Hathaway... for one thing she'd be more suited to Glinda or Nessa, and another:

A little unfair, but the woman is having trouble singing a high E in head voice let alone belting it. Most actresses can probably sing like Anne Hathaway, it's just a decent dime-a-dozen voice. The movie also won't be made for probably at least 5 more years, in which time new stars might appear and others will be getting older.
People, if they're not even slated to begin pre production until 2016, I can tell you now the girls who will get the roles are still practicing french kissing their pillows at their 7th grade slumber parties as I type this.
The idea that Menzel or Chenoweth would even be considered for these roles is laughable. Even if they both did an amazing indie film where they play white trash carnie transsexual lovers who were murdered just for being who they were, and through their death have taught millions tolerance and acceptance and won Oscars for the parts... THEY ARE TOO OLD FOR THE FILM! They can sell a Broadway show, yes. However this is a different ball game. Marisa Jaret Winokur can be believeable as a 15 year old girl on stage but she's 40! The camera isn't as kind as a seat 20 yards from the stage.
Universal will spend so much money getting this film made when the time comes that they're going to make damn sure they make every penny back and a whole lot more. So if that means casting Miley Cyrus and Kelly Clarkson than you'd better believe that's what they'll do. This is no RENT or even HAIRSPRAY. This is an enormous undertaking that I have no doubt will be a stunning finished product. But to even entertain the idea that either of these women (who I think are both very talented) will be seen in the role is just delusional.

bubbleblonde: Thank you! Anne Hathaway just isn't a belter. I don't even think she'd be able to get it right once in the studio. "Defying Gravity" is a hardcore belter song and we need someone with the vocal chops, not someone who couldn't even sing "Somebody to Love" without straining.
And remember, the RENT film used its OBC despite age disparities. Look at how well that went...
If the movie is really that far off (2016), then just about every name being thrown around now would be too old. Amy Adams would be 42, Hathaway 34. Who knows where her career will take her between now and then, but Diana DeGarmo would be a great Elphaba.
JENNIFER HUDSON FOR ELPHABA!
Why am I the only person who thinks this is a good idea? She *can* sing the score as it was written (and God knows she can riff to high heaven) and we all know she can act. Give the girl a chance to play somebody who's not Effie (which is basically the only character she gets to play, even in other movies).
Also Kristen Bell has great comedic timing and a nice voice. Make it happen! She'd be a great Galinda.

I'd love Jennifer Hudson in the role, actually.
^ True, she could definitely sing and act the part.

Hudson plays the same rolls in all her movies because she can't act. Effie is what Hudson is like so she just plays herself over and over . Sorry to bust your bubble.
blaxx, I agree.
dutch, I agree with you that Jennifer's acting abilities are very limited. I do not believe, at all, that she deserved that Oscar either.
Still, excellent singing and so-so acting is enough to pull off Elphaba. I enjoy Idina very much, but I still cringe at some of her acting. She acts properly through the singing, so it saves her.
Same goes for Jennifer. I've said ever since the Oscar win that if Jennifer had had no songs to sing - or even had all the songs to sing sans "And I'm Telling..." - that there would have been no Oscar for that part.

Jennifer Hudson was nothing like Effie personality-wise. She wasn't just "playing herself" like people claim.

Sorry blaxx! I didn't realise the Wicked Witch of the West was supposed to be a plus size black woman with huge tits. The cost of the Act II dress will make even Schwartz's eyes water.
I watched an interview with Kristen Chenoweth and she said shes heard nothing about Wicked becoming a movie besides random rumors

I think that if he wanted to, Joel Grey could def. reprise his role as the Wizard.
Meryl would make a pretty good Madame Morrible.
or maybe Julie Andrews.
I can't think of anyone for the other characters though. It all depends on the "superstar du jour" at that time.

Keep going, love, your stupidity and racism wouldn't hurt a real artist, anyhow.
First of all, I would LOVE to understand the thought process that one of the greatest film actresses of all time, Meryl Streep, would want to play such a crappy role as Morrible. I'm sorry, but she is way too talented and famous to take such a small, not-even-interesting part.
Jennifer Hudson actually struggled a lot to come across as sassy and brash when she initially was hired to play Effie. I remember reading that the director had to have her come on set in character, so that she could better get a grasp of Effie.
Also, Miss Hudson is BEAUTIFUL. Anybody who can't see that is blind or stupid.
Hudson deserved that Oscar. Her performance was heartbreaking as Effie.
I'd love for her to play Elphaba. She's so talented.

Is Diane Keaton too A-list for Madame Morrible? She has a good voice.
