Does anyone know why they didn't put the Wicked Witch of the East on the Wicked soundtrack? I find it weird since it's a pretty big part of the show.
The producers felt the song included too much dialogue and would also give some of the plot away to people who have not seen the show.
I love the number. Even with all the dialogue it only runs about 7 minutes so would have easily fit on the 1:10:00 cast album. I don't get the whole "gives away the plot" argument.
It is my unfounded belief that they were too lazy to bother adapting it for record in a form that would make sense so they just left it out. Thank Goodness for bootlegs!
Awwww..."soundtrack".
^ I didn't even realize. I feel bad for any person trying out for nessarose. How do they listen to nessaroses only song in the show? It's like the producers are encouraging bootlegs!

Probably anyone auditioning to play Nessarose on Broadway has a voice teacher or someone that can teach them the song.

You know, while we're at it, I don't feel like opening another Wicked thread. Does anyone ever realized why the dragon moves at the scenes he does? I thought it was at all the essential parts of the "wicked witch" journey, but then he moved in a scene that I don't think it was essential (and I don't remember which (ha) one).
Just these days I read on a thread why the dragon is there and all the cogs (the Clock of Time Dragon is meant to be showing us the story through his mechanisms)
Actually, the cuts in "Defying Gravity" are designed to withhold info, to, are they not? This was a topic back in the early days of the album's release. And always seemed unnecessary, since the number's drama (and excitement) are about Elphaba being trapped and truly rising above. Yet none of that is on the recording. Just a vamp and then her ascendancy.

Funny, I was just thinking about this the other day after getting the Ghost OBC recording (which has a huge amount of dialogue, which I love). Do people really listen to cast recordings before seeing a show and not expect there might be some spoilers?

Matt, I think it's a losing battle! I cringe every time I see it.
Me too. I expect it on Facebook and such, but here...

hi. just a heads up that it is cast recording. not soundtrack :)
Maybe they'll include it on the film's soundtrack

I never understood why they would cut Wicked Witch of the East from the cast album, yet have on there March of the Witch Hunters. I honestly feel that they both give away important plot points for those who had yet to see the show. Why they picked one but not the other isn't something I fully understand.
And March of the Witch Hunters is really quite painful to listen to.

Gotcha, thanks for the correction! And yeah, March of the WH does pretty much gives away most of the plot twists in the show while the ending dialogue of WWOE could be cut.
I actually have another question re: the cast recording versus the show. I was admittedly a fan of the recording for a while back in the day but I've never seen the show live. The end of Dancing Through Life on the recording is one of my favorite parts (the harmony of "and the strange thing, your life could end up changing) but I'm looking at a copy of the sheet music (the piano-vocal rehearsal score) and I don't see that part. Am I blind? Is it not in the show? It cuts to something called Elphaba's dance.
Dancing through life is a weird one. The entire song takes place over 3 scenes. The song ends at the elphaba dance. It's also my favorite part of the show.

Dancing Through Life has evolved since the OBCR. I've seen the show 8 times and remember different ending a couple of times. I believe most of the time it has been cut. I'm sure they made that change in the first half of the run.
